What things do you hope to pass on to your kids?

So I know most people have hobbies or traditions and such that they hope their kids will take an interest in. Not all kids end up continuing the hobby but some at least have an appreciation for it.

Do you have any hobbies/traditions that you hope your kids will continue?

My DW and I have a strong passion for music and art so we're hoping our kids will take some interest in it. We won't be upset if they absolutely hate it but it'a nice to be able to share what you like with your kids.

Re: What things do you hope to pass on to your kids?

  • i hope our kid is a punk rock kid like we were as teenagers (and still kinda are, though no one can tell from the outside anymore)...that would be fun.  but kids never like the same music as their parents, do they??  we'd also like to pass on our aldabra tortoise--considering they live to be over 200 yrs old, they'll probably have to pass it on too!  :)

  • DH and I are both very musical, so there's that. We also both love to read, so if Sprout doesn't like reading I may just be heartbroken. We live in an outdoorsy paradise and plan on taking him/her on hikes with us as soon as my dr. gives the go-ahead, so hopefully he/she will love nature. And finally, I was raised with a strong faith in God, and DH returned to his faith as an adult, so we will be raising Sprout the same way, and I hope that he/she finds the same kind of relationship with God that his/her father and I have.

Same! Haha I sometimes play some of my heavy metal songs around them (I only play the inspirational ones around them at this age) and look forward to having jam sessions when they're older lol they'll probably like something completely different.
  • Reading! I hope DD and this baby love to read as much as DH and I do. It's my favorite hobby. DH is very musical so I'm sure he's hoping the kids take an interest in playing an intstrument.
  • I hope they love music but not the drums.  Those suck to lug around lol.  I also hope we pass on compassion and empathy.  I think those traits are lacking in a lot of the world today (please no flames it's just a personal observation which could be completely wrong).  A strong work ethic and desire to succeed is something else I would like for them.  Our faith is huge as well.  I really pray they have a personal relationship with God.  To me it's the most important thing in my life.

  • Mine would also be music. I am a choir director and sing with two community choruses. My children don't have to sing but I will encourage them to get into some type of music. It gave me confidence and creativity growing up. I would love for my children to experience the same through music.
  • I want my kids to read too! I've actually started taking them to the library as often as possible and so far, they seem to be excited. But I get the feeling they're more intrigued by the pictures lol I also like writing books for my kids so I encourage them to help write their own stories when I do.
  • My DH's and my height and athletic ability. We are super active people and hope that our kids will share our love for adventure and activity!

A love of the outdoors, snowboarding, and skateboarding.  Appreciation for the ocean.  Gumption.  Reading (of course).  Creativity and/or appreciation for the arts.  Literacy in the sciences and an interest in health sciences is another big one for me.
  • Respect, yo.

I just want my kiddos to be involved in something. Whatever makes them happy, whether music, sports, dance, art, etc.

DD is in dance right now and LOVES it and she's really good. I was always in sports and so was DH.

  • There are a few but the one that stands out the most is sports. DH & I both love sports, I personally played softball through college. Neither of us ever played instruments so I hope DD is into sports, any sport. Just to share a common passion.

  • Both me and my husband love sports and the outdoors so we hope this little monster is athletic and outdoorsy like us. Also we don't have this tradition in any of our family but we have talked about it to start once we have a family of our own and that is for every year to volunteer at a shelter or a place to be able to give others. Also we talked about when it's Christmas time and the baby is a bit older to gather all those toys he/she doesn't play with anymore and go to a children's shelter to donate in our to receive new gifts. This way he/she will understand to be humble, to give, and to value their own life.
  • My musicality! I am a singer and DH can't carry a tune. I hope they get his sense of adventure, though. I'm a little bit of a cowardly city girl and he goes camping and hunting and tree climbing and the like...I hope LO follows suit :) plus, reading, definitely. We both love to read.

  • I just hope they find something they love and can be passionate about.  My passion is reading, so I would love if my kids shared that.  It makes my heart happy when ds sits down with his books or brings me one to read to him.  My husband is a runner, and I know he would love it if our kids were into running too.

  • I really hope to pass on my love of outdoors and nature, love of reading and my daredevil sense of adventure. I want them to live in a world that they can appreciate and understand but to be able to approach life without too much fear. I'd also love if they got my husband's mellow go with the flow nature when it's needed.
  • Well... I love everything art and creative and music. So I hope our kiddo loves to create wonderful art, be it visual or musical or otherwise (whatever that may be..) and I want it to think clearly in stressful situations like me and be able to maintain a very cool head like I can. It's a useful trait. I hope it takes a strong interest in reading and writing like I did and like my mom did.

my husband wants our kid to grow up playing good video games. Not like shooters and stuff, but good, old games like the original Marios and Sonics and stuff, but of course in moderation. He wants a playful, energetic kid who loves to run around and go to the park and do lots if different things, not just one thing.

I do have one tradition I'm going to start... My only full-blood brother I grew up with died in a car crash over 5 years ago. Ever since my DH and I decided to try for a kid, I've wanted a way for him to be a part of my kids' lives, because even though he was the definition of Punk, he would have LOVED to be an uncle. I know it. So I told my DH that every birthday they should get a present from 'him' something that would really come from him- like a shirt with skulls or guitars or drums, or something to that effect. And on Christmas Eve, they should open the present from him early. And maybe even put a note in there every year saying how much he loves them and how he watches out for them, even though they can't see him. That way, when they get old enough that they can understand why they can't see him like they see their other uncle and auntie, at least they will have grown up feeling like he was always there.

  • Well, I am getting a second chance at this, so I have lots of hopes here.  My son is 13, and my daughter is 11, and had to unfortunately get through a very painful and dysfunctional home life when I was with my ex.  They are both very creative and cuddly, and I love that.  This time around, this baby will be in a harmonious and loving household, and Daddy will be very involved, engaged, and sweet -- and I'm looking forward to watching him impart all of his gifts into this little one...hopefully his love of reading and food and passion for learning.  From me, I hope they will be creative and artistic too.

I'm half Puerto Rican! I would love to pass on our traditions but my parents are the "lets be as American as possible" immigrants. So, I only learned Spanish in high school which I forgot a majority of :/ but I learned to cook amazing Puerto Rican dishes from my mom so that I plan to pass on! What were some traditions you learned?
  • I hope DD and this little bean learn our love of animals.

Both DH were very active in sports in High School. He was captain of the swim team and I was captain of the competitive cheerleading squad. I'm particular about what she's involved in, but it needs to be active!

  • Well I want my kid to love reading like me and I have a list of other stuff but most of that is just DH and I being competitive. Like I want them to love association football more than american football and cars more than computers. With both DH's and my competitive steaks I don't see how this child is going to avoid having at least something on a competitive nature but we'll see how that goes.

  • We're huge nerds. And by huge I mean we dress up at comic conventions and everything (costuming is a hobby of mine). We both hope our kids are fairly geeky, because we wouldn't know what to do if they were 'cool'! Also I hope they get our passions for learning and family, both of which are very big influencers in our lives.

Can we be BFFs? The room that is going to become the nursery very soon is "wallpapered" with comics my husband and I collected, and there's a box of old comics my dad gave to me because I was always reading them growing up. We go to cons. We want to dress up. But I always wait till the last minute and we always just look at the great cosplay and compliment them. Big comic/anime/video game needs here. But most people can't tell outwardly. XD
