Are you working out yet?

I was exercising practically everyday during pregnancy, including right up until the day before my water broke.  My dr told me to wait 2 weeks PP before exercising again, which is tomorrow.  I feel ready to work out but don't want to overdo it.  I plan to start out with a PP workout that came on a pregnancy workout DVD I bought, but really I want to get right back into running.
If you are working out, how long did you wait?

Re: Are you working out yet?

  • Just started (2 weeks pp) no cardio yet mainly because my boobs can't handle it (too much bouncing and not enough support) but started doing weights and resistance training. More muscle will help burn more fat even without the cardio.
  • Loading the player...
  • I has a c section. I'm 4 weeks pp. I overdid it raking the yard and paid for it. No exercising here.
  • I started back at 2 weeks. I also worked out up until the very end, so I felt ready and it felt great! Just start slow and listen to your body!

  • Ran 4wks PP had to do kegels while running so I didn't pee my pants. I also, only the first 200m have discomfort in my abdomen...after I got going it went away. GL, it feels real good to start taking care of yourself again!
  • Not doing anything other than walking until cleared by OB, which I hope will happen next Monday @ my 6 week PP appointment.
  • I really thought waiting the reccomended full six weeks was going drive me nuts! Good to hear its going ok for some. For those who are working out did it affect your bleeding? That's what's holding me back. I don't wont to do anything to make it worse.
  • I've been walking, and carrying the baby, and that's exercise enough at this point.  I hope to be cleared for more exercise after this coming week's 6-week appointment; I want to do some yoga and work on building my leg strength and wind back.

  • I started back at about three and a half weeks after the c-section, just gently. Dressage is a pretty dramatic sport and I will be waiting for a doctor's clearance before getting on my horse, but that doesn't prevent me from trying to get my core back in shape and get my cardio endurance back, which is shot all to hell after eight months grounded with nothing but swimming.

  • I'm antsy to get to my pre-pregnancy weight & look, and while its all melting away, I'm concerned about any major changes to diet/exercise will mess with my milk production.

Either way Tues will be my 4w PP mark, and I have to wait until 6w to start building back any diet or exercise over rocking, carrying or feeding DD.

  • I waited until I stopped bleeding/had no more discharge before I started to become active. I CrossFit and am lucky to know my OB because she does CF at the same gym. She emailed me and told me I could start back at 4 wks PP but to take it easy.
  • We just moved and I just need to find a gym... I plan on working out to keep my sanity. I'm a SAHM so HELLO gym daycare for some alone time... even if it is spent working out. :)

Exactly.  I've BTDT with my previous 2 pregnancies, and I completely overdid it with my first.  Waited with my second.  My second, I was really successful in getting back to my routine and absolutely loved it.  You can "take care of yourself" without pushing yourself too far too fast.

I will wait until cleared by my doctor.  I encourage you to do the same.

I've been walking and doing a bit of body weight resistance work, but that's it so far and LO is 18 days old.  I'm within a few pounds of pre-pregnancy weight and would LOVE to run soon, but I'm concerned about my supply if I were to get too lean too quickly.  I'll be asking my doctor about that at my incision check tomorrow.
This is just me, but if you're eating near the 300 extra calories per day recommended for BF'ing your supply should be fine (once it's been well established), I found that hydration was insanely more important than calories consumed.  Now, please take that to mean a REASONABLE intake of calories...  I *think* I "know" you well enough to know you're not stupid enough to do a ridiculous calorie-restricted diet while trying to BF a NB.  :)

  • I am 4 weeks pp. I did weight training before getting pregnant. 4 days pp I started to ease into the treadmill and last Thursday started on the elliptical. I think this week I am going to ease into legs and arms but not do Abe excerisrs until my 6 week checkup.
  • 2 weeks PP here and just did the elliptical for 30 min, I feel great!
  • I'm ready now that LO is sleeping through the night more. I was a member of my local roller derby team before I found out I was expecting and I have been antsy to get back.

Ooh, I can't wait to skate again! I had to give it up in 2011 when our team lost our practice space and disbanded, but I've moved back to a town that has a team again and my best friend is on it, and has been trying to get me back to practices. Only down side is my DH's Amazonian ex, who has retained a bitterness towards me that may not be entirely unjustified, is also on the team and skating with her may just be taking my life in my hands.

Hard to keep up roller derby and competitive dressage at the same time, too. But since it's winter and we don't have an indoor riding arena...maybe I'll dig out my Riedells and get going...

  • Jogged for the first time on the treadmill last night. No bladder control whatsoever. Damn it. Chafed thighs are no fun.
  • I was just about to work out until I read this. I think I'll just go for a walk. :-)

If you are making 25 oz of milk (the range is 19-30 oz) and breastmilk is avg 22 calories per oz (the range is 15-40+ calories per oz) you need to take in an average of 550 calories more when breastfeeding to make breastmilk.  The range is 285 to 1200 extra calories per day if you do the math.

I would aim for 600 additional calories per day.  The 300 extra is on top of the 300 extra you'd be taking in for pregancy, so 600 over your usual intake.

Realize that in the immediate post partum time period your body is completely redoing your whole blood supply, rebuilding your immune system (esp if breastfeeding) and rebuilding most of the abdominal muscles, uterus, and vaginal walls.  You also have a scab on the iside of your uterus that must heal.  A lot of exercise immediately post partum can cause a delay in that healing, like you keep picking the scab off. (yuck!).

So be very careful with post partum exercise before 6 weeks as it can delay your healing process.  Also be very careful with abdominal work, if you have a separation between the abdominal muscles, too early or the wrong kind of ab work can actually make them separate further necessitating surgical repair.

  • I started doing cardio a few days PP with DS and this LO.  I didn't ask my OB this time, but with last pregnancy he told me to just return to exercise as I felt ready. Like you, I exercised through pregnancy, up until the day of delivery for both pregnancies.  I take it easy, but getting to the gym helps me feel sane.  DD is nursing so often, though, that it's hard to find a time that works for my husband to watch the kids when I feel she is zonked enough to duck out for an hour.
