OB or Midwife?

Hello Ladies
I am looking for some advice. I was wondering any thoughts on choosing on OB or a Midwife. The hospitals around be are very accepting to midwives so that is not a worry. I am just looking for some help I am on the border with the topic.  Any suggestions?

Re: OB or Midwife?

  • I'm cheap so I can't afford to dish out for a midwif so I stick to my OB only. But if I couldn't find an OB I liked I guess that would be a different story. Good luck

  • Meet with both and see who you like best. I used an OB, but I never had any interest in delivering anywhere but the hospital. My only concern was the baby's safety. When I was pregnant with K&A I never would have considered a midwife because I was so worried about risks and complications. They were both hopelessly breech so I ended up needing I have a c section anyway, but if K(baby A) was head down I would have gone for a vaginal delivery. I loved, loved, loved my OB! She delivered all three of my children. She moved to another practice shortly after K&A were born which is sad for me. I think at the end of the day it is very important that you are comfortable with and trust your health care provider. GL!

  • I vote midwife! When I was PG with LO I switched to a midwives about 1/2 way thru my pregnancy and never looked back. I preferred the care and background that a midwife had as opposed to an OB. My midwives were more open and supportive to the way that I wanted to have my baby. They seemed to listen to concerns and have a more genuine care for me and my baby as opposed to the OB that I saw. I saw a series of midwives, I wanted to get to know many since I didn't know who would actually be "on" when I was in labor. I loved seeing different people and did end up having a midwife that I had seen during pregnancy as the one who delivered. So I was comfortable with her which was nice.

  • I went with a free standing birthing center. It is actually run by an OB midwife duo, but run more like a midwife birthing center. I left the big box OB at 34w. They didn't listen to me, they had no idea who I was and I was getting a really bad feeling about the whole thing. I begged my hubby to let us check out birthing centers (he was very uncomfortable not being in a hospital).

when we had our consult with the birthing center (actually with the OB) she listened! She took an hour (no charge) to sit with us an answer every question we had. As we were leaving I just knew that was the place.

So to go back to your question of how to pick. Ask friends. Check the Internet for reviews to narrow the field. Set up consults. Ask them questions. From what I can tell from my experience the midwife will go further to help you achieve the birth you want. An OB will take a more aggressive approach to ensure the catastrophic doesn't even have a chance to happen. Both ways are right for different people. And if you are or become high rise, you will more than likely need to switch to an OB.

    Good luck and congrats!

  • I think the main thing you want is someone you are comfortable with. I just hate the notion that OBs are somehow insensitive and midwives are all caring or that only OBs can handle "real" medical emergencies and midwives can't, etc.

I never considered a midwife because my OB knows me and had known me for years prior to getting pregnant, he knows my history, never makes me feel rushed, answers all my questions, is open to my ideas and I trust him to do first and foremost what is best for me and the baby and secondary to that, what he knows I want.  That he's an OB isn't the important part though, it's the rest that is.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Thanks Ladies for all the help! I am defiantly going to check out both in my area and go from there.
