Working Moms

Snow days

Is anyone else feeling totally bummed that they have to be at work during a snow storm? My amazing mom drove over at 5:30am this morning to babysit b/c DS is still getting over being sick and I wasn't sure if DC would have a delay/closure with the storm. I'm at a new job and don't have any time off yet and don't have access to Wfh. So I spent 50mins getting to work (normally 10mins) this morning. My job is not critical, it just feels like such a waste to be here today.

I have never worked at a company that has snow days, so I always have to drive in anyways or take a day off. I hate it. I need to step away from Facebook b/c all my teacher friends are posting about their snow days. It makes me seriously depressed. Just once I'd like to have a snow day where I stay in my pjs all day, go sledding with my kids, and drink hot chocolate.

Re: Snow days

  • I WFH so there is 0% chance of me ever getting a snow day. DH used to get snow days but now his company instituted a WFH policy for bad weather. We hate when daycare is closed for weather because that means one of us has to take the day off.

Last Friday daycare was closed but luckily that's my regular day off. It was nice to play in the snow with no guilt for missing work.

  • I know exactly how you feel! I'm stationed in VA and last year we had a large amount of snow. While some shops got to stay at home, we had to shovel snow on the flightline. It was depressing.

  • We never have snow days at work either but thank goodness that for my job I can wfh. The DC my kids go to has never been closed for a snow day. They closed early once at 3 p.m. but that is it in 9 years.  I do count my blessings for that one.  Although I am saving up a vacation/sick day to call in for a school snow day so I can play in it with my kids.

  • Ugh, I know the feeling.  We had a blizzard last week on Monday/Tuesday which was followed by arctic temperatures and a few smaller snowfalls.  So my commute has been brutal for a week and a half.  I am exhausted.  It's hard because it's not even super busy at my work right now and I could manage to do the same work at home with a laptop.  I really wish they would make that an option.  It's 2013 - we should have more telecommuting!

They did let us leave a couple hours early one day though - which was nice.

  • yes im so depressed. its snowing like crazy and DS is stuck home with the stomach flu. DH stayed home with him bc he can work from home and i cant so i would have had to take a day off. it just stinks, I want to be cuddling with my baby but instead im stuck at work and im not even busy! **vent over**
  • We had a storm on Friday that dumped 7" of snow. I took the day off b/c my mom didn't feel safe driving to our house to watch DS. DH went into work and they ended up sending everyone home, and my office closed early as well. Friday was really nice. Five days later we still have snow on the ground (snow rarely lasts more than 24 hours here), it hasn't gotten above freezing in days (and got as low as -10 over the weekend), my commute has been hell because the roads are super slick, SS has been out of school this entire week, and I'm just over it all. But I'm going into the office again even though I would love to be home and cozy with SS and DS.
  • My daycare is never closed and my school never closes so don't be too jealous, not everyone closes.  I spent an hour and 45 minutes doing my normally 20 minute drive on Monday.  It was fun.  I think you just do it and be glad you made it in one piece.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • we don't get snow days, however, we have the ability to wfh should we feel uncomfortable about driving in.  my manager is very chill about that, she lives farthest of anyone and hates to drive in the snow :)
