Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Tablet for 22 month old

My daughter loves playing her games on my ipad and iphone. We would like to buy her a tablet for Christmas. Any suggestions on a good tablet to purchase for a 22 month old?

Thanks

Re: Tablet for 22 month old

  • I would just stick with the iPad.
  • Loading the player...
  • I know that there is the Innotab 3 Baby...it's not something I would buy but I noticed it when I was at the store. I didn't realize they made such a device for the little ones. (I'm a little behind the times I guess).

  • My friend gave a Kindle Fire to her kids and she said it's great and much cheaper than a real tablet.

  • Thanks Zimger and Aglenn.

Lalamam81 I am only looking for suggestions on which tablets moms have purchased for their toddlers not so much input from the AAP nor your opinion on what is considered "over the top" for my child.
  • Anyone had any success with the leapfrog and leapster tablets?

  • DD has the Leapfrog tablet but she is just now really using it much (age 4). It is more of a preschool toy.

I would stick with an iPad or Android (Kindle Fire, Samsung, Surface) tablet.  Because the Leapfrog/Leapster systems are "closed", you have far fewer choices for apps and the apps are more expensive.  Buy one of the major operating systems so you have the most options and the pad can grow with your kid.

And FWIW, if you're going to post a question about screen time, you're going to get many people telling you that it's not a good idea.  If you don't want to hear it, don't post.  There's some new research emerging that interactive screen time may be different from passive screen time like TV, but the research is still very new and the AAP hasn't budged from the recommendation.
  • Leapfrog has educational games and such on it, but I am not sure at the minimum age they recommend.

  • uconnhuskie- A $200 tablet? I don't know what toddler tablets you are referring to at $200.00 or if you are reading the other responses at all. Or perhaps you thought this was your opportunity to vent your own frustrations. It really isn't that deep, sweetie.

At anyrate, thank you to Tavia, Shann, Zinger and Aglenn for answering my question.
  • Thank you Uconn. Enjoy your day!
  • I got a innotab for my now 5 year old when she was 4. It was the biggest waste of money ever- the games are expensive and all she wanted was my iphone and ipad. My 2 year old also only wants my phone or ipad. I would go with an itouch if you are going in that direction- you can put all the games on all the devices- you can buy one for $100 refurbished, and I think lasts longer.

Same thoughts in my mind on leapfrog.

    Just my two cents.

and my 22 month old and 5 year old both have LOTS OF screen time :)

  • We have recently been having the ipad debate for our son. I have a few games on mine for him. But he always wants it when im trying to use it. Plus we thought we could load all of our digital copy disney movies on it and use it as a portable movie player. We decided to wait til after christmas to get him one mainly for financial reasons. But after the holidays I intend on buying him one. Ill buy a life proof case for it. He will only get it for a limited time of the day. But I feel he is learning from playing the games on mine. And like I said it will also act as a movie player while we are out or a music player (he is a dancing fool) His ipad will never replace actual playtime.
  • It's still Dec ladies. It is way to early for everyone to be getting the "I'm bored let's bicker" cabin fever syndrome like siblings on a three day school closing. Closed due to whatever weather terminology you deem appropriate.

It was the right thread. I was making an attempt to curb this one. I've already accepted a likely failure.

    Wrong thread but agreed.

  • I just got the new kindle fire for my birthday and my DD loves playing games on it.  The size is good for her since she can hold it easily and it works similarly to an ipad.  Apps are the same price as Apple as well.  Having said that she will be 3 next month and I would not buy her her own.  It seems like a waste of money for the amount she'd use it.  And she would probably end up breaking it.  Hopefully, that answer isn't too offensive for you!
  • We bought our daughter a used Ipad mini when she was 25 months old. We wanted something that would grow with her and that was also user friendly. We got a kid friendly case to put on it. Her grandfather had bought her a nabi last christmas (18 months old) and it was awful. It was not user friendly at all.

I was thinking of buying one for my LO too. He loves my ipad. My friend bought a kindle fire for her LO and said it is a lifesaver especially during doc appointments. I heard the leapad games are expensive. Also I would suggest if you do get a tablet to get insurance on it for cracked screens. My iPad screen is shattered every couple of months.
  • Whoa. Major drama with this question.

I have an iPad that my 23-month old daughter loves to play. We very much limit her time on it, but it is the only thing that she will sit still with when we put her shoes/brace on every night (for her clubfeet). If I want the shoes on correctly and not give her blisters or sores on her feet, she has to sit pretty still....and for the occasional other time where I need a few minutes to do something, I don't feel bad giving her the iPad to play toddler-friendly games. A lot of them are animal sound apps (like a book with the sound buttons) or a piano app or a Mickey Mouse interactive app.

I've seen the Nabi/Nubi (sp?) tablet for $39-49 that seems much more reasonably priced. I wouldn't have gotten DD a tablet of her own at this age personally, but my dad was willing to buy an ipad mini for her, so I will take him up on it. In the small chance she would damage mine, it is nice to know she will have her own and won't ruin my things.

  • I bought an ipad mini and my 15 month old loves it.  I downloaded quite a few apps for her and it's cute to watch her playing the games.  Most of them are educational but some of them are just fun for her.  She probably plays with it about thirty minutes a day but it's not all at once.  She doesn't watch TV so i'm not worried about too much screen time for her.  I bought an Otterbox case for it so it's pretty sturdy for her.

  • 17 mo old recently broke my Nexus tablet. So I treated myself to the new kindle fire hdx. For dd I purchased the warrenty and a heavy duty protective case :)

I did look at the leap frog but read that the price of the games is expensive and the quality isn't that great.

I figure in time we can let her use the kindle to stream movies (I paid extra for LTE) and play educational games while we are traveling.
  • My mom wants to get my 18 month old an ipad for Christmas. I told her that's ridiculous. I have some apps on my ipad that I let him play with, but I don't want him glued to one all day long. He tries to demand use of it sometimes and throws a fit when I say no. Tough shit. She just bought him a table and chair set, so hopefully she's over the ipad idea. And thanks PPs, I'm going to to buy some foam bath letters today!

  • I don't like DS playing with my phone -- even with it locked he could still place an emergency call.

I have an old iPhone that I took the SIM card out of -- and then I put it inside this Fisher Price case to protect it from the elements and the throwing. I've removed all of my account info from it so it basically functions as an iPod. So I put a bunch of music on it that we like, and he mostly plays with that. The phone itself is so old that I can't load the latest OS and can't get the latest toddler games, but he doesn't know the difference.
