Will you do the whole Santa thing?

LO's too little to get it right now, but honestly, I feel kind of weird lying to D1 and telling her there's a man living at the north pole making toys with his elves. I get it, it's childhood tradition, yada yada yada, but part of me would rather just be honest and just try to teach more of the spirit of giving and less that there's some guy in red watching her all the time. Is that ridiculous? What do you think- will you do the Santa thing?

Re: Will you do the whole Santa thing?

  • Probably. But we won't make a huge deal. The smaller gifts will be santa presents and the "big gifts" from us.

Also, I have been to Santa's house in North Pole, AK. His "elves" sell souvenirs. I got to pet the reindeer. :)

I don't think we'll overemphasize Santa but we won't go out of our way to tell her he isn't real, either.

This is kind of what I'm thinking. My parents didn't make a big deal of it, so when we were kids it was fun to wonder if he was real, but we weren't crushed when we found out. My sister in law told me I better buy an Elf on the Shelf so her boys could see that every house has one. Um, no.

How cool! I didn't know this existed!

  • Mrs.G123, my sister's kids don't do santa. She has told them from the very beginning that santa is a nice story for Christmastime but he isn't real.

  • We will do Santa.  DH and I had Santa when we were growing up and I wouldn't take that away from DS, it makes Christmas fun and magical.  Christmas isn't all about Santa but Christmas morning waking up with gifts from Santa is a special time in our family and we want to carry on the tradition.  It was so sad when my niece didn't believe anymore.

DS will also learn the religious aspect of Christmas too.

  • We do Santa at our house! My sister is 6 years older so she ruined it very early for me, but DS1 still believes so we'll continue it. I think it's fun and DS1 loves making cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

  • The magic of Santa was an amazing part of my childhood. I absolutely am doing that with my girls. Dd1 also understands about giving to others and she understands the importance of Christ. By understand, I mean she understands as much as a four year old can.

  • We are definitely doing Santa. I remember helping my parents be Santa after I found out and I really enjoyed it. I would help wrap with a different paper and fill the stockings.

  • We do Santa. DS is so excited! I remember believing and it was so magical! It makes me sad to think about Santa phase being over. Wes is 3, so I hope we still have several years left!

  • Yes, we are a Santa house. When we say Santa, DS points at the ornament of him on our tree. And like others, I have great memories of expecting Santa on Christmas Eve and waking up before dawn to see what he brought us.

As the youngest child, my siblings told me the truth when I was pretty little (I think I was 6), but I still wanted to believe anyway. And I never resented my parents for being Santa, the tooth fairy, or Easter Bunny.

  • We'll do it. This is the last year we'll let SD believe. She can't go to middle school next year talking about Santa right?

The elf will not be returning. We only did is for SD because she cried that our neighbor had one and she didn't.

When B is old enough to understand, we'll be moving to an elf free town. :D

  • We will do Santa to, I don't think it is really lying to your children to much but it helps bring around the magic of Christmas. I remember helping be Santa for my brother and sister after I knew (I am 5 years older) and it was so much fun to see their faces on Christmas morning as they ran out to see what Santa brought for them.  With so much hate in this world I want to have a little bit of magic left.  OP if you choose not to do Santa please teach your child not to ruin it for others.  My brother was so upset when he was 5 because a kid a school told him Santa was not real, my mom did an amazing job calming him down but it still was super sad to see him so upset.

    This.
+1. They have the rest of their lives to know the truth about everything. Why not believe in something fun and have that excited feeling in your stomach Christmas Eve.
