For Bottle Fed Babies

Just wondering what flow of nipple do you use? My LO sucks down a 6-7 ounce bottle in 15 minutes. How fast does it take your LO to eat a bottle? He is still on the slowest flow nipple for our bottles. I tried using a faster flow nipple and he sucked it down really fast and spit up like crazy.

medium flow.  he's 4 months.  slow flow takes forever and he loses interest before the bottle is done.  He has a big belch after but he doesnt spit up

  • It depends on a great deal of factors for my LO, he'll eat anywhere from 4-7 oz in a feed, sometimes it's unpredictable, but usually he's done in half an hour.
  • DS will be 3 months tomorrow and we switched to Dr. Brown's Level 2 about a week ago.  He was getting bored with the slower flow, but we were cautious in switching because he has reflux so spitting up is an issue anyway and we didn't want to increase that by him eating too fast ... but we just make sure we burp him in between start to finish, sometimes 2 times, and it is working fairly well.  But DS never took the Level 1's quickly like you said...he'd tire or get bored and it would take 30+ mins to get even 4 ounces sometimes.  Now we are getting about 5-6 ounces in about 15 mins (not counting the burping times) and he is doing really well with it.  We had tried the faster flow nipple maybe a week or two before the actual switch and it was a little too much for him at that point.  So you may wait a few days and try again.  I'm a FTM so I am obviously no pro but that's what worked for us :)

  • five months and using a 6 month stage three TT nipple. She takes around 6 oz in ten minutes.
  • Well I used the faster flow nipple all day yesterday and it seemed to work just fine. He definitely wasn't ready before but I think he is now.
  • DS is 5 months and still on slow flow.
  • Going to be 4 months and he is on medium flow. Bottle is avent. He drinks breast milk faster in a bottle about 15min. On occasion he gets formula it takes a little longer 20min max.

  • We use a level one on the Dr. Brown's bottles. She takes about 20 minutes to go through a 6 oz. bottle. We don't plan on upping the flow until she shows signs that she's ready.

  • My LO will be 17 weeks this Friday and still uses level one. Until he becomes frustrated at the bottle we won't be changing.

  • how do you know if LO is struggling with the flow?  My DS will often fall asleep and 'sleep suck' his bottle, that's different, right?
  • @DebbieM422 Yes, I think that's different. We knew it was time to move DD to a level 2 when she was taking forever to finish a bottle and seemed to be getting frustrated(or fussy) with the bottle.
  • DS is 14 weeks and we are still using a Dr Brown's level 1 nipple. he manages to plow through his bottles pretty damn fast!

  • My LO is 15 weeks and we're still on level one nipples (Dr. Browns). He's a pretty fast drinker, though – nanny says it takes him 10-15 min. to eat 4 oz. I nurse him at night and on weekends. Don't plan to change up unless he makes a stink.

  • N is 5.5 months ish. We still use the slow flow. I've tried the medium, she spits it up and the fast just ends up all over her.
