I just got the Dx today. I have one C677T and two A1298C mutations. I do not know what my homocysteine level was. but my OB said I am now high risk and wants me to go in tomorrow to discuss lovenox.

Honestly, I'm super overwhelmed and the shock is just...just.....wow.

Anyone else have MTHFR? Whats your experience

Re: MTHFR

  • I have one copy of each mutation and am in lovenox 40mg. My homocysteine levels were low. I take a special prenatal vitamin for ppl with mthfr call neevo with dha.

I found out about mthfr after being tested after a miscarriage

  • Did they prescribe you the lovenox before checking your levels? Im just worried if my levels are 'ok' that it could cause harm to just start it without the levels being wacky. I am also asking about Neevo tomorrow.

  • Hey, not stalking you I promise :)

Lovenox at the basic low level they will probably recommend won't do any harm even if your levels are normal. I actually started my lovenox shots before my embryo transfer and we know my levels are normal outside of pregnancy. Doc never felt the need to check my levels after Pumpkin settled in as its simply a precautionary dosage and not a therapeutic dosage.

And prophylactic lovenox won't even cause you to have bleeding concerns- I sliced open my thumb a few weeks into the shots and it had no problem clotting and healing normally. You'll need to come off it before delivery (most docs switch to heparin which has a lower halflife) but that's easily managed.

  • All my levels were within normal. This was done just after a miscarriage. They prescribe a prophylactic dose, so it's super low dose. With that kind of dx I would def take it. I work in l and d and we get ladies who have late losses with a diagnoses like that before being treated. So that's def something you don't want to mess around with. Ya it sucks to poke your self every day but it's worth it for the little one...

  • I had a late loss before being checked and then found that I too have MTHFR. I take extra prenatals, a daily aspirin, and daily shots of Lovenox (well, the generic). I will switch to Heparin at 34-36 weeks, which will be 2x daily shots. I will then be back on Lovenox after delivery for at least 6 weeks.

It was overwhelming to get the Dx, but it is something that is not difficult to manage. The daily shots are relatively easy now, as you get used to giving them to yourself.

  • thank you for all the help. I am getting my kids tested now. I worry if they have it because they just got nitrous oxide at the dentist and more reading into MTHFR shows that will increase homocysteine levels. I will need 3 detox baths a week and my supplements will cost me $100 roughly/month. oy vey.

  • I have MTHFR, but am homozygous C677T.  For my DD, I was on Lovenox throughout my pregnancy until I found out I was allergic to Lovenox and Heparin.  For this pregnancy, I was on Arixtra, but my MFM decided to take me off of it due to my lack of history of every having a blood clot.  I currently just take a baby aspirin daily and extra folic acid.  According to my OB and MFM, there is mixed research out there on the effects MTHFR has on pregnancy and miscarriage.

  • I have one copy of the MTHFR mutation.  I am currently on Heparin, baby aspirin and extra folic acid for this pregnancy.  Lovenox was not well covered by my insurance at $697 for 12 shots, so went with the heparin which is quite a bit cheaper.

I agree with Noethola above that it is an overwhelming diagnosis, but definitely manageable.

  • I was diagnosed with homozygous MTHFR and was placed on baby aspirin, 4mg folic acid, B12, B6, a prenatal, and Lovenox. I was sketchy at first with the Lovenox but I just had my baby girl on December 1st and she was as healthy as I could've hoped for.
