April 2014 Moms

23 weeks with contractions :(

I went to L & D last night due to having some dull achy cramps that were consistent thought out the day. They hooked me up to the contraction monitor and told me that I have "irritable uterus" and that I was having minor contractions. Thennnnn I have an ultrasound and they tell me my cervix is borderline short. They put me on bed rest for the week and I'm freaking out. This is my first pregnancy and I'm so scared that my twins are going to come early. Has anyone else experienced this? The doc said that if my cervix gets any shorter they are going to start me on steroids to help develop the babies lungs. I'm just a bundle of nerves :(

  • So sorry! No advice or experience with any of that here. But (((hugs))) and lots of prayers!
  • I'm sorry that's so scary! Hopefully the bed rest helps. The good news is you're so close to viability. I have a friend who was carrying a baby as a surrogate and she started leaking amniotic fluid around 24 weeks. She wound up being on hospital bed rest for like 8 weeks and then they delivered the little girl. Little girl is doing AWESOME and spent less than a week in the nicu. It was an ordeal, but a very good outcome. Hang in there!

  • I'm so sorry. That's really stressful, but steroid shots do a lot to help the baby, and if they keep a close eye on you hopefully babies will stay on the inside.

I have a friend whose twins came at 31w- they are now thriving 3yos on track for every developmental milestone. If you get another few weeks out of this those babies have pretty good odds.

    good luck!

  • A good friend of mine had this with her twins at 23w. She actually started funneling and was placed on hospital bed rest. She made it all the way to 36w and then needed to be induced!

Try not to stress yet. It will just add to the irritable ute. Take the bedrest seriously and stay hydrated. I'm assuming they will be monitoring you closely now, right?

Praying those babies stay in as long as possible!

  • With my 2nd pregnancy I had irritable uterus. Starting right at the beginning of 2nd tri, I would get contractions constantly. Painful consistent ones that would take my breath away. The OB said some uteruses just do that, and they continued to monitor me closely. I was worried it meant I would go too early because my 1st baby came at 36 weeks when my water broke. At 35 weeks I had a close call, so they put me on bedrest for one week until 36 weeks (what they considered the safe zone), and even after getting off bedrest at 36 weeks, DS ended up not coming until 38 weeks. When he did come, however, he came about 2 hours after I first realized I was in labor, and it was the quickest delivery ever, so I think that was the benefit of an overactive uterus. Just sharing to give you hope that an irritable uterus doesn't necessarily mean an early delivery. As far as a shortening cervix, I hope it stays where it's at, and I'm sure close monitoring will keep the dr's on top of things. The steroid shots seem to be a great tool with situations like this. Hang in there. Hoping for the best for you!

I shared this story on another post. A momma on my DD's BMB had a short cervix as well found at her anatomy scan at 20 weeks. She was put on bed rest and was given a cerclage (SP?). She delivered her DD I think around 34 weeks and she is now a thriving 2 year old. So hang in there. Try not to stress too much it isnt good for you or the babies. ((HUGS)) to you momma!

  • Thinking of you and your babies! Rest up and keep us posted!
  • You can do it!!! It's hard to not stress, I get that, but bed rest can help. Steroid shots for the babies is a good precaution, even if they wait! It's good your dr. is offering them.

Think positive thoughts even if that means bed rest at home or the hospital!

  • I had the same with my daughter last pregnancy. They put me on bedrest and she stayed put until 37 weeks. I also had a pretty quick labor and delivery.

Also, I got into a car accident yesterday and went to L&D and when they put me on the monitor I had uterine irritability as well. They gave me a couple of bags of IV fluids and it got better. Definitely think stress ad dehydration play a role.

Thoughts and prayers to you and your two little ones!!
