anyone have an IUD?

I got my Paraguard on May 1st and had no issues whatsoever with it. Fast forward to mid-October and my period started, no big deal, but then just didn't stop. It was heavy and really clotty. At the third week, I called my GYN. They tested for pregnancy (miscarriage), my blood cell count and iron levels-- all of which came back normal. She then gave me the Nuva Ring and said that the estrogen in the Nuva Ring would trigger the period to stop. I've used the Nuva Ring before.

It never stopped. It goes from being bright red and a normal flow to the brown, old blood. I never know what it's going to be on a daily basis and honestly... it's now December, and I am effing over having a period. 

I think that this is an issue with the IUD and I'm wondering if anyone else who has or has had an IUD has experienced this. I'm going to call my GYN back this week about possibly getting it taken out. It's kind of ruining my sex life, honestly.

    Having a really heavy period is pretty normal with Paragard. Since it's your first period it'll be really really heavy. I don't think this is completely normal, but it could be. I had Mirena for a few months. I ended up having it removed since it made my sex drive disappear as well as a few other issues.

    Sorry, I should have clarified-- this is not my first period on the Paragard. It's been on time and normal since I got it.

    This is something that I haven't dealt with before and I am honestly at my wits end. It's freaking gross, among many other things.

    Ah I guess I read it wrong. Since it I thought you had said that it was your first period since having the baby. Which isn't too unusual. I know that with the way Paragard works that it's pretty common to bleed pretty heavily. Since thats how it works, by making your uterine lining too thick to implant in. However, bleeding for a long time is pretty gross. I'd keep talking to your doc about that. Hopefully it is just a fluke thing.

    I have no experience with it however, I don't think bleeding for 3+ weeks is normal. I would get it removed. All the time there are recalls on birth control that they later found out negatively impact women, Yaz is a perfect example.

    My periods are heavier than hell with Paragard, and last a full week, but they do indeed eventually end. By heavier than hell, I mean that I will sometimes literally soak through a Tampax Ultra (yep, more absorbant than Super and Super-Plus!) in less than an hour. Totally sucks, but to me, it's still worth it for the peace of mind and lack of hormonal side effects. Still though, if I were in your shoes, I think I would have to draw the line at a never-ending period!

    Get your hormones checked. I'm a lurker but I had non stop bleeding for months that couldn't be explained (I didn't have an iud however) and when I went to my pcp instead of a gyno they did more extensive blood work and I had issues with my pituitary gland and my hormones were wayyyyy out if whack, causing the bleeding.

    Go to your primary care doctor and have them do a full work up. Hopefully it's nothing serious but I just had to post this in case it helps!

    Hey I had my first IUD put in in April 2013. It was Mirena. I bled non-stop crime scene blood amounts for 8 months until I had it taken out. I went on the nuva for about 2 weeks and nothing was changing and I kept reading horror stories about it. I ended up switching to a pill with iron because I was concerned my iron levels would be way low after 8 months of NONSTOP bleeding. I am actually getting a physical this week to check my thyroid and everything else to make sure I can be healthy to start to try for next baby  :)

    Agreed, all birth control has side effects, and a heavy period is better for me than the ones associated with the hormonal birth control methods.  

    I have had 2 periods since having my paragaurd, and they are heavier, and last a full week, but do stop.  

    I would definitely keep working with your doc to figure it out.
