sippy/straw cups: size and how many

What size sippy or straw cups are you LOs using?  how much liquid do you actually put it at a time?

How many cups do you have?  Do you use a fresh cup every time, or refill the same cup throughout the day?  If your kid is in daycare, how many cups do you send-- does daycare fill them, or do you fill them?

How long do you let LO drink out of a cup of WCM before you dump it?  do you ever re-refridgerate a cup of WCM that they started but didn't finish, or is that a germ no-no?

I feeel like there were so many guidelines on bottles, but very few on cups--- I'd love to learn what you all are doing?

Re: sippy/straw cups: size and how many

  • We have two that I love (Tommee Tippee).  She is getting more for christmas.  We have four Nuby's but I don't like those because they leak... its spill proof but not leak proof. She has a nuby at daycare, they don't seem to mind. I only have to take one on monday and then I take it home Friday for the dishwasher.  They hand wash them every night.   They fill them with water at snack time and then milk at lunch.

I just tossed a nuk one because it leaked everywhere! It was a trainer cup anyway, so I think she chewed through the spout.

I try to use the same cup throughout the day. She normally doesn't drink all the milk I put in it at breakfast, I fill it about 2/3rds full.   So she gets that again at dinner, if she wants more she gets more.   If she doesn't finish that, it gets dumped and the cup gets cleaned and ready for use the next day.

On the weekends, I will let a cup sit out for a while, if she's drinking it.  If shes not, it goes in the fridge, but I do put out a cup of water instead. I refill that when its empty.

Anyone use these  avent no sip cups?  I saw these in BBB this weekend, but I wasn't sure how well they work.

  • I hope some else responds because I'm chuckling at most of your questions.  I didn't use a whole lot of bottles and am pretty relaxed with these types of rules.  DD has been using straw cups since April.  Her main cups are 5 oz, but she's gotten a couple bigger ones and is getting a few more larger cups (9oz??) for Christmas.  We're only doing juice in the sippy right now.  I'll fill half to 2/3 with water and the rest juice.  Again, mostly we're using the 5 oz cup.  Right now she has 6 cups, but 3 of them are our main cups.  I only use one cup per day.  After she drinks the majority of the juice/water combo, I just add water to the cup.  DD is at a sitter twice a week.  I send her with one sippy already filled plus two bottles of WCM.  Generally, DD will finish her WCM in the bottle, but if she doesn't then I do put it back in the fridge and finish it later.  Again, I know that there are probably a lot of moms that are more picky about this kind of thing, but this system has been working so far.  After Christmas, we're hoping to transition off of bottles.

  • We have 6 straw cups. All Playtex 9oz.
I fill one with water and one with milk for the day.
He usually finishes the 9oz with breakfast then gets refills for meals and snacks throughout the day.
    He has water between.

I'd say he drinks 25-30 oz of milk a day and 10-15 oz of water.
He eats several times a day.

He's a thirsty boy. And eats a lot too.
But still only weighs 20 lbs.
  • we use the same one throughout the day (and on more than one occasion several days later, as I have found them in the toy box, under the train table, and in other various disgusting places that sippys should not be.  I should also mention these are sippys with milk not juice.

In all seriousness (even though the aforementioned is 100% true, disgusting and shameful I know), we use the same cup throughout the day, and toss it usually the next day or so.  its in the fridge in between uses.  We have several sippy cups, all of which he hates.  he will take a sip and then hide them (its great.)

im giving him the avent "drinking" cups for xmas in his stocking, hoping he like those more.

I'm eager to see how he likes the avent cups!  Please report back after christmas!

  • we use two playtex sippy non straw cups and Ill put WCM in them and let them sit out for an hr or two and if she doesnt finish Ill put in the fridge.  I use the Nuby with straw for water only.
  • I pretty much fill all of them half to 3/4 full no matter what the size is  :).  We have one playtex straw cup that he'll only drink water out of. We have three comforts for toddlers sippy cups that we rotate though. I send two cups to daycare. One for milk and one for water. They give him the milk cup and then refrigerate it. They don't really have a sink to wash it so we have to take it home everyday and bring back the next day. If I don't send a water cup, they don't give him any during the day. he just gets the milk at snack and lunch times, which is usually every two hours till they hit 2pm and then it's like they forget. sometimes he'll get a 4pm snack but not always. I only give him milk at meal times cause he won't drink it at home. He rarely finishes a cup so most of time I'm tossing it after a couple of hours. If the cup has water in it, we'll use it a couple days (rinsing it in between) and then wash it.

  • Have any of your pediatricians mentioned drinking more than 24 oz of whole milk a day can lead to anemia? I had never heard of it but since I have a few medical issues, though never tested anemic, I changed the amounts LO gets to stay below 24oz. LO drinks either three 8oz cups (she always leaves a little in the straw cup) or four 6oz cups of whole milk. I use one cup for juice/water and one for milk per day.

  • We have six (I think) of the insulated Playtex 9 oz. straw cups. We re-use the same one all day typically. We also have some Tommee Tippee sippy cups and some random brand someone bought for DS, but he doesn't really use or like those.

I send one of his cups with him to whomever is watching him that day. (FMIL also has sippy cups at her house for DS, but I don't know how much he actually uses those.) At home he gets a bottle most nights before bed, but not at naps. I don't send bottles with him.

I don't have a set amount of time before dumping milk because the cups are insulated. When I feel it's been too long I dump it. He usually just has water in his cup unless he's eating a meal. I also do not re-refrigerate WCM.

  • A uses the avent cup that was mentioned, it's pretty good. She is pretty close to drinking from a normal cup without spilling though.
