Flu shots

I've never been one to get the flu shot myself but I'm starting to consider if it's necessary for dd... (Yes I will be talking it over with her pediatrician and doing more research... I also don't want to start a debate on vaccinations). I'm just really curious if other moms do or don't have their kids get a flu shot?? And what their experiences were - any side effects? Did they get the flu in spite of the shot? Stuff like that... What are your thoughts mommas?

Re: Flu shots

  • I went back and forth on it since I don't typically get the shot and according to the CDC, the flu shot's effectiveness in children under 2 is pretty low.  But ultimately I decided to get it for her, mainly because I'm going to be having another baby soon with a compromised immune system.  We had no side effects.  The first time LO gets the flu shot, you're supposed to have a series of two shots.  So we go back in a couple weeks for the second one.

  • It was recommended, so we did it. She had one in September and the other in October. She goes to daycare and I'm a teacher, so she is about as exposed as it gets!
  • The flu shot isn't perfect but our little ones are such a vulnerable population.  They are exposed to so much and the protection it offers was completely worth the little bit of discomfort he had from getting the shot.  He seemed to be a little tender/sensitive in the area that he got the shot but otherwise he was completely fine.

I have always received the flu shot.  I did have the flu many years ago and it was awful.  I cannot imagine DS dealing with it and I cannot imagine having the flu and having to take care of him either.
  • DS needs to have it for daycare, so we obviously had to get it. Regardless of that requirement, I'd rather him get the shot than the flu. He was fine with it and didn't even make a peep.

  • I did it, and so did DS, DSS and DH. None of us had any side effects. Like pp said, I work in a school and DS goes to daycare, so there are nonstop germs. He is also a skinny little thing, so it is kind of scary when he gets sick.

  • I never had the flu shot until I was pregnant and it was recommended. I've had it three years in a row now and all for ds. He got it this year because he's had some viruses that have landed him in the hospital twice:( plus my nephew had the flu this year. He is 21 months. He had febrile seizures, had to have fluids, and got pneumonia. Poor guy. He ended up at the ED from it. So yes I think the flu shot is best for everyone in the home.
  • J got the flu shot last week. No side effects except for a GREAT nap!! lol
  • Charlie had the flu shot about a month ago and had no side effects except for sleeping a little longer. I get the flu shot too every year. I used to not get it and would end up with the flu twice a year, but now that I actually get the shot I haven't had it for years.

  • DS got the flu shot at his 15 month appt last month.
    DS1: 8/2012 <3 DS2  8/2017 <3 DS3 10/2018

  • DS has gotten both his flu shots. First in October, then second at his 15 mo. well check in Nov. No side effects and so far he hasn't gotten the flu. He's in daycare so it was important that he get it.
  • The whole family got them this year. DD2 had the first in October and second at her 15 month we'll check. No side effects.

  • DD got hers. I work on a respiratory unit so I'm in contact with the flu frequently; I'd rather her get the shot than the flu!

  • DS and I got ours but everyone I know says to never get them again because of all this crap they supposedly cause, you could die, blah blah blahh. I don't know if I buy it. Guess who's sick with the flu right now? DH. Guess who is a conspiracy theorist and won't get a flu shot? DH. And guess who's not sick? Me and DS, thank you.

  • None of us get the flu shot.
  • DS got a flu shot (in 2 parts) last year after he turned 6 months (so tail end of flu season). He and DD and I have already gotten them for this year as well. DH talked about getting one, but I don't think he did yet. He did last year when DS couldn't have the shot for most of the winter.

I never got one until my work offered them free and then I was pregnant and had little babies. But the kids have always gotten them. Flu can be serious (esp. in little kids), so I'd rather try to prevent.

No noticeable side effects for any of us, and none of us have gotten the flu after getting the shot, though it is possible to catch a strain that wasn't in the vaccine.

  • Thanks for the replies - I'm thinking it might be better safe than sorry but dh isn't on board so far.
Emailed doctor and he isn't insisting on it based on the fact that we tend to stay home. He was more concerned about the germs she would be exposed to by coming into the drs office just for the shot...
