Balancing bottles and solids?

For those of you who have BTDT - any advice on making the bottle as appealing as solids? For those going through it (with LOs 4-12 months) - what's your daily menu look like?

G is very small and it's a fight to get her to take even 22oz formula/day. She was breastfed until 6.5 months and doesn't prefer BM - she fought it then too, so that's not the issue. She would just much rather play and look around than eat. Our pedi is aware. I always offer 28oz but the little stinker only takes 22-24oz on a good day. On the other hand, she LOVES food!

Here is what our feeding schedule looks like (keeping in mind that she snacks on puffs occasionally and never finishes her entire bottle :/ ):

early morning: 6oz bottle & breakfast (this morning: 1 ounce of Greek yogurt, 1 ounce peach puree, handful of sliced avocado
late morning: 6oz bottle
early afternoon: 6oz bottle & lunch (today: 2 ounces butternut squash and handful blueberries)
late afternoon: 6 oz bottle
evening: 4 oz bottle

dx: MFI 0% morph & low count. Occasional Anovulatory cycles.

Re: Balancing bottles and solids?

  • That looks fine to me Penny. I don't offer more than 24 oz of formula a day. I never have since we started solids. He gets 5oz at 5am, some cereal and fruit for breakfast followed by whatever formula is left over from 4oz once I mix some in with the cereal. Lunch is some veggies, protein, and a bit of fruit followed by 3-4oz. He gets 5oz at 3pm and then dinner is cereal, protein, veggie, and a bit of fruit (probably totals 4-5oz of food) followed by 4oz formula. Then he gets 4oz at bedtime. He still eats frequently in the day....

  • I don't even count how many ounces he takes since we started on solids. LO is 7.5 months and we feed him pretty much all the same stuff that everyone else here does. When he gets fussy not at meal times and when he's tired, I offer a bottle. My next hurdle is not panicking when he's eating something with a little more texture than a purée. I am so fearful of him choking. I just started giving him scrambled eggs with cheese and he loves it!

  • Actually since we're on the topic of feeding - so curious...My kid seems to be a bottomless pit. He can eat and eat and eat and it doesn't seem like he's ever full. I thought babies would tell you when they're finished but I don't think I've seen it - I just say hey, I gave you enough cereal for a grown man. I think you're done. What are you guys experiencing???

  • Thanks girls! This makes me feel a whole lot better.

@leolauren G will gobble up ungodly amounts of food... as long as its something she likes! One time I gave her mashed potato and she wanted nothing to do with it. She would eat her weight in blueberries if I let her. I usually give her as much food that would fit into a jar of baby food (I think that's four ounces??) then I offer a bottle if she still seems hungry which, of course, she refuses. :)

Hard to say, J and my sweet pooch are in cahoots. We do baby led weaning, so J eats real people food. Once she appears to be feeding more to the dog than herself we cleanup and quit.

  • The only thing you might want to think about is separating the bottle from the meal. Mine are EBF but when DS was up to three meals a day around 7 months his schedule was something like:

    7:00 - nurse
    8:00 - breakfast
    10:30 - nurse
    11:30 - lunch
    1:30 - nurse
    4:30 - nurse
    5:30 - dinner
    7:00 - nurse

So at the beginning he was still nursing every 3ish hours and had his BM before a meal. He loved his solids but still got full nursing sessions in before meals.

  • Penny - I also agree that your schedule looks good. My LO gets 6 ounces in the AM - then 8 ounces late morning. Cereal and either yogurt or a veggie for lunch. Another 8 ounces late afternoon. Cereal and a fruit or veggie for dinner and then a bedtime bottle. Unlike G she still loves her bottles! She's very intrigued by real food but seems to gag easily and I too am way to worried about her choking :(

She also snacks on puffs at daycare but doesn't eat them when I offer at home. Go figure.

  • Looks good to me as well. DS didn't drink that much milk. 16 - 20 ounces a day but ate a ton of food. As long as they are getting their nutrients it doesn't matter. If he wanted more food I would offer it. Eventually they will start to drop bottles anyways so maybe your lo just started sooner. I think your doing just fine!

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • For those texture ladies...my LO seemed to struggle with lumpy but then a month later is chowing down large chunks. Just keep offering more chunky every so often! It does seem to matter what it is though - Cheerios and chunks of avocado are ok. Chunks of cheese are not yet. Also, I was giving my blueberries mashed and stirred into his oatmeal but now I just stir them in whole and he likes that.
