Lurking from PAIF with a SUA question

Hi,

I just had my 20 week scan and they noted that I have SUA (single umbilical artery)- did any of you have experience with that to share?
They said everything else looked okay so they would check my growth again at 32 weeks but we elected to have a fetal echo done (heart looked ok so far tho) and genetic testing as we didn't have that done at 12 weeks.
I am a bit nervous now! (More than my normal level of craziness!)

Thanks for listening!!

Re: Lurking from PAIF with a SUA question

  • I did not have it, but it seems like (although I am not 100 percent on this) I have seen some other moms have this on my iugr boards who had this and that sometimes it can contribute to size/growth issues.  I am not 100 percent on this, though. Honestly, if you researched this and found it to be true, I would push for more frequent ultrasounds than waiting until 32 weeks because if it can contribute to iugr as the baby gets bigger, you don't want to go from 20 weeks to 32 weeks without a growth ultrasound.

  • @ibackbevo. Thank you for that feedback. They did mention it could cause iugr although for now, I am measuring on target. I have an appt with my OB next week and I will definitely bring that up. I was overwhelmed when they told me (my appt was a few hours ago) so I just started Dr. Google!

@PhillyJ33 - I would definitely ask for more ultrasounds.  At my 20 week ultrasound with DS, I was measuring 5 days ahead.  By the time my IUGR was discovered at about 32-33 weeks, I was measuring about 4-5 weeks behind and in the 3rd percentile.  I even had an ultrasound somewhere in between (I think about 26-28 weeks) and was still at about the 38th percentile...so IUGR can come on fast.  And it is more likely to become an issue the further along you go and the baby gets bigger and has more demands.   I would not want to go all the way from 20 weeks to 32 weeks without a measuring scan if they know IUGR may be an issue.  Too much of a chance that things can go downhill quickly...Honestly, I would probably push for one at least once a month and maybe more often like every 2 weeks. I think once my iugr was confirmed, I got them about once a week along with NST's. AGAIN, I am not trying to scare you, but going from 20 weeks to 32 weeks when there is a known issue seems risky to me.

  • Does anyone remember love bug? Didn't she have this? She had extra monitoring for AMA anyhow, but LO ended up growing just fine. Can anyone back me up on that? She doesn't post here anymore.
