Snow Removal

We just got blasted with about a foot of snow and I am dreading shoveling our stupid driveway. Almost to the point where I'm considering getting a plow service to do it as one of MH's Christmas gifts. I'm curious, if you are responsible for snow removal where you live, what to you do? Extra credit if you know how much you pay for plow service :)

Re: Snow Removal

  • We have a shared driveway and it costs $100 (split with our neighbors) each time the plow guys comes... but he only comes if it is over 6".  Otherwise the neighbor has a snowblower we shovel.  I can't find a kid to pay to shovel to save my life!

  • Have I ever mentioned I'm glad I don't have to deal with snow?  I'm freezing just reading these responses.

  • Well, our place is a condo and we hire someone to shovel the walkways in front of the townhomes.  Our condo fees cover that.  We have heated underground parking and once in a while we will need to shovel a bit ourselves to get out in the morning if there was a heavy enough snowfall.

  • We have a snow blower, so my husband does our driveway and sometimes our road up to the highway.

My husband's friend snowplows and his cheapest rate is $40. Most of the guys here cost about $60, and if you are not on their list, you probably won't get plowed for at least 24 hours after a storm. Their regulars come first. We live in a higher cost of living area.

@WonderJess: Damn, that's expensive! I hope you guys have a super long, really wide driveway! :-O
Nope!  It's not big at all!  It's just really expensive around here.  :((

  • My H shovels when needed. We don't have a long enough driveway to pay anyone to plow or shovel.

  • @WonderJess That's an insane price!  My wallet hurts for you.

I voted "We shovel" but what I really mean is that DH shovels.  I do all of the inside chores and he does the outside.

  • I know when we lived in VT last year our plow guy lived on out road and charged $20/day (normally plowed 1 or 2x). We asked him not to plow unless the snow was deep bc we both had 4 wheel drive vehicles. The year before that our driveway was super long and narrow it cost $70/each plow trip. Now we are in yucky rainy brown Georgia with no snow :(

  • Voted ss because dh has a plow so he takes care of the driveway and any shoveling that needs to be done.

  • I'm lucky I guess as I never have to do it, my H just automatically goes outside and shovels the whole driveway. He also shovels a path for the dogs and pig in the backyard and a large section for them to walk around in.
