BLW check in

How's it going this week?

We had an adventurous weekend! The girls had French toast with unsweetened blueberry applesauce spread on top for breakfast yesterday (that was their introduction to eggs), and omelette with spinach, kale and a sprinkle of cheddar for lunch. Saturday I made the chickpea patties from the BLW cookbook and doubled the recipe so was able to freeze some uncooked patties.

Tonight I'm planning meatloaf and mashed potato. I like my own recipe (I'd leave off the ketchup) better than the BLW cookbook one but mine calls for oatmeal... Since they had toast yesterday, a bit of dry cooked pasta last night, and Cheerios too, maybe I should leave out the oatmeal. Fit those of you who are giving LO what you eat, how often do you give them grains?

They are getting really good with their pincer grip too.

Here's a pic from last week when we tried burgers and "fries." I caught poor E mid-gag.

  • @Trish625, he is so cute! E and V are 7.5 months so we did just the basics for quite a while - we've really only started giving them some of our meals within the last week or two. I love it, except the prep and cleanup for even the simplest meals does take time.

I'm sorry about the skin reaction. Strange that apples would cause that! I've heard that a reaction might not happen until the second or third time a food is introduced.

Pears are a favorite in our house too!

  • @makeupgeek that was smart to order a side of broccoli. We went to a Mexican restaurant this week and I felt so bad that he watched us eat and I didn't bring anything for him. And I didn't know what I could have ordered him on the side. . Maybe some avocado? But then it would have been a big mess. Hmm. I'll have to plan it out better next time.
  • @Trish625 Yeah, Mexican might be tough. We really don't eat out that often but my parents do and we were with them. I picked Applebee's specifically because I knew they had broccoli there. It was definitely a big mess but I made sure to clean up our area as best as I could. The whole time I was just thinking about how the waitress probably hated me. But really she was nice and gave me no indication that it bothered her. And DS had an audience - the elderly couple nearby loved watching him eat.

  • L is getting better at swallowing small pieces of food.  I'm starting to relax a bit while watching him eat.  This week we introduced cucumber, eggs, and apples.  We are still keeping it pretty basic as he learns to eat, but we like to give him a couple choices of food.  I was surprised that he really liked the cucumber last night.  I think he found it much easier to pick up than the other slimy options.

Google has been auto-updating my pictures and, to my surprise, turning some into gifs.  So, here is L going after cucumber.  Sorry for the large picture size.

  • @makeupgeek, my mom felt the same way, and she watches the girls while we work. She has been offering them pre-loaded spoons with runny/mushy stuff and now she's ok with offering them Cheerios and cooked peas, smashed blueberries, etc. She's even coming around with the bigger finger foods after seeing how well they handle it. I think your mom will come around if she sees him in action enough.

I would start offering him Cheerios or other small pieces to practice on alongside bigger items he can already pick up easily - that way he can practice without getting frustrated.

Kudos for letting him eat at the restaurant - I haven't been brave enough to do that yet.

  • @cromie713, how did you prepare the spinach? Did you just cook it and offer it by itself? I want to offer more leafy greens for the iron but not sure how. I put some in an omelette yesterday but would like some other methods.

  • ^ cute! The picture is right side up to me. I've tried oatmeal fingers twice and both times were a fail - they completely fell apart and oats were everywhere.

  • You guys make me jealous with these adventurous foods! I am such a food wimp.

When you give them broccoli, do you just give them a steamed spear?

I bought the BLW book, but didn't get very far into it. Maybe I'll pick it up again.
  • Yes, we just give them spears of steamed broccoli. At first I cooked it separately and just gave them that but now I cook it in stir fries.

  • @pumpkinandthepeanut you inspired me to be more daring so last night I made breaded chicken strips from the blw site and today I made turkey and veggie meatballs and he loved both. Woohoo! He wouldn't try meat at all before.
  • Yay! That's great, @Trish625. I need to check out the BLW site for some new recipes.

  • This may seem like a stupid question but I read no eggs until age 1...is that not the case anymore?

I don't know what to think. At our 6 month appointment, our pedi said all those rules are outdated, and the only one that is still true is no honey. She said as long as you're waiting until 6 months, then you can start to incorporate any food that doesn't have a family history of allergy. Her big thing was purees, so no BLW.

I specifically asked about egg. And she said as long as it was thoroughly cooked and then pureed, I could start it at anytime.

BUT, then she gave me the practice's handout on starting solids, and it said no egg until after 1. :/

It's no longer the recommendation. My pedi said they now believe that earlier exposure may decrease the risk of an allergy. They recommend it be introduced closer to 6 months rather than being delayed at my last appointment.

Here's one article on the topic: https://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/prevent-kids-food-allergies-start-peanuts-eggs-sooner
  • Thanks ladies I have never heard of this and my handout also said no eggs. Didn't that study come our recently that starting solids earlier increased allergy risk (before 6 months) and not the opposite? It's all so confusing.
  • There is so much conflicting information out there, it drives me insane. Everything recent that I've read says everything but honey and nuts is fine from 6 months on, provided you don't have family history with allergies. So I waited until about 7 months to introduce yogurt, cheese and eggs. Haven't done fish or shellfish yet.

  • ^ no nuts for the choking risk, not for the allergy risk.

Yeah, my pedi said no nuts or nut butters because of choking as well, unless it's super thinned out in a purée. But that wouldn't be BLW of course.
