Inconsolable

Poor DH is at his wits end. The last two days our DD has woken up from her nap in such a bad mood. Within minutes she will start screaming/crying and won't stop. She kicks and scratches if he tries to hold her and she will thrash around if he puts her down. She will have moments when she starts to calm down but then starts right back up again with the screaming. Yesterday it went on for 4 hours. Today it went on for 3 hours. She is fine the rest of the day.

Any one have any thoughts on this? I don't think she's getting any teeth (at least not that I can tell). She is normal the rest of the day so I don't think she's sick. I am at a loss on what to do or how to help my DH. I'll be home with DD tomorrow so I will see how she acts tomorrow after her nap.

Re: Inconsolable

  • I think she's not ready to wake up, but my kids are grumpier after nap than in the am, I miss warm weather when we could go out after nap.

  • When DD doesn't sleep long enough for her nap, she starts screaming almost immediately. I've learned to wait 5 minutes before going into her room. About half the time, she'll flop over and go back to sleep on her own before I get in there. She recently started taking longer naps too, so maybe your LO wants to go back to sleep but YH is stopping her from doing it by going in to her right away? Might be worth trying a delayed approach for a week to see if she goes back to sleep.

  • DS2 does this too. It's awful. I assume he is still tired, but I can't get him to go back to sleep without waking up my other son. I usually try distracting him with a snack or turning on music and dancing. He loves to dance. Most of the time he screams until ds1 comes down to play with him. After ds1 is up all is right in his world again.
  • I agree with everyone else, sounds like she's still tired.

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm not sure it was linked to lack of sleep since her nap was the normal length both days. I was home with her this weekend and she was a little grumpy waking up but nothing what my DH went through. The only thing that I can think of is seperation anxiety. She's been really attached to me the past few weeks and maybe she's expecting me when she wakes up from her nap, then flips out when I'm not there. I'm not 100% sure but that's the only thing that makes sense right now.
