TMI: sitz bath?

As I was discharged from the hospital yesterday, I was given a sitz bath kit to help relieve pain and clean my stitches. I was told to take 3-5 sitz bath a day. I'm just now finally getting my first one in. :-S

Here's my question: did anyone else have PAIN while doing the bath??? I keep hearing about how it's supposed to relieve pain, but I'm actually not in too much pain except when I sit on the toilet. The position of sitting in the bath hurts so much, my entire body is shaking!!!

I realize its important for hygiene too, but DANG, this is NOT relief!

Anyone else feel like this? Am I really just that weird?

Re: TMI: sitz bath?

  • I was actually instructed to soak in the tub 3x a day for a week. No sitz baths for me, so I can't help you there, but having to soak was a nice excuse to take a bath 3x a day!

I'll ask my OB of I can do that instead! I cannot really handle one more thing causing pain at this point!

  • I was told baths could help but wasn't actually instructed to take them at all and never did (I've never been much of a bath person). I lived off the plastic bottle, showers, and frequent pad changes for hygiene, and ice pads, tucks pads, and that foam for comfort, so a bath might not be necessary for you to take at all if painful for you. Hope you feel better and congrats in your recent wee one!

This is mostly what I did.  I actually liked the sitz bath, but finding the time to do them was hard!

  • I was sent home with one as well and had the same reaction.  I didn't use it again, I was almost in tears.  It felt like my stitches were going to rip out.  I have been making sure to get in a nice long hot shower and put our shower head on a low pressure and rinse down there basically until the hot water runs out.  I've also cleaned the area with witch hazel on cotton balls.  FWIW my hospital gave me the sitz bath as an option, not something I HAD to do.  I also just use the plastic squirt bottle every time I go to the bathroom to make sure nothing stays behind.
  • I took baths almost every evening at first. Earth Mama Angel Baby makes sitz bath "tea bags" and I just threw a couple of those in the tub with me. It was a great little break from being attached to the baby 24/7 and really helped me feel human and my bum feel better. I hope your OB will clear you for a bath!

  • I had the same experience. I was given the kit and told that it would help with pain but not that I needed to do it. Sitting on the toilet was excruciating so I sat on it very infrequently crying most the time. A few days in I felt like I was tearing in half (had episiotomy) and called my dr's nurse. She said that I should do a sitz bath in the tub several times a day to help keep the stitches most. Worked very well for me and eased the "I think I'm dying" feeling.
