Secondary IF

Intro and some questions

Hi everyone! I've been a bumpie from the time I was TTCing my first. I conceived DD my first cycle off birth control with zero problems. I've just hit the one year mark of trying for #2. It's so frustrating, and I never expected to have problems the second time around. I hope it's ok for me to come here. AF just came 2 days ago. My doctor had ordered hormone testing this past cycle. The day I went in they stuck me 5 times and were unsuccessful, so now I have to wait to try to get the bloodwork done this cycle. Grrrr. I do chart my cycles and they are all normal and ovulatory, so Im hoping that's a good sign. My question: how much does fertility testing cost? We are looking at some insurance changes. One plan covers nothing. The other plan covers testing up to diagnosis, but not treatment. I'm trying to figure out if the testing would cost enough to warrant me going to that plan. I'd also have to go to a new OB and the RE in the city that Im most interested in isn't covered by the plan. I'd have to go to a different RE that I've heard less good things about.

  • Sorry for the lack of paragraphs. iPad.

  • I'm not sure about the costs. My plan covers diagnostic work-ups but not treatment for fertility issues. I know they did bloodwork on me first and then sent DH for sperm analysis before they put me through more invasive testing (HSG, for example).

Welcome to 2IF! It's hard to have to be here, but if you have to be somewhere this is a pretty great group of frustrated ladies. :)
  • I just wanted to say hello & welcome! Sorry you find yourself here, but I'm sure you will enjoy your stay which I hope is short! :-)

I'm not sure about the insurance question, mine covers thankfully so I'm not sure on the cost for things...
  • Welcome and good luck!

  • @TicketTuesday I can't get over the cost difference when you are OOP. They charged my ins around 3k for just my HSG. Did that $450 include the cost of xrays? I think just that one xray was $1200.. Totally ridiculous.

OP welcome, good luck. I would go with any coverage you can get, you never know how extensive your testing will be, you know? Every little bit helps.

  • We aren't doing treatment yet but IUI's will run about $1000 each cycle.

Wow! My RE quoted us at $300 per IUI. I wonder why there's such a range!

I think that depends what type of IUI you are doing. A clomid IUI is much cheaper than an IUI with injectables

  • Welcome.  My insurance covered testing and diagnosis and any procedure that would allow me to conceive naturally.  So, I got the hysteroscopy I needed covered, even though we were doing it for IVF.

I woud say, since you don't know what road you are headed down yet - go for as much coverage as possible.  You could be looking at IVF, which will run you 20-30k, or you could be looking at some meds to help you conceive naturally or IUI.  Either way, you'll be ahead if you weren't already paying for the testing.

Trying for #2 with IVF after damage done in a D&C left me with one functioning (but too scarred) ovary and tube to get pregnant safely without assistance. It's a really, really long story, but that is the gist of it.  We have one daughter (whose c-section birth started this roller coaster) born in 2012 after a miscarriage in 2011.
Failed 1st attempt at IVF (Fresh ET day 3, 1 frozen embryo saved) in December 2013.
Failed 2nd attempt at IVF (Fresh ET day 5, 2 frozen embryos saved) in February 2014.
