Screaming!

So DD just started this random noise lately. Its like a scream but it's a LOUD and deep yell. She does it when she's frustrated, wants my attention, or wants something I have. Its not really a problem at home but its like nails on a chalkboard to me. It can give me an instant headache! The big problem is when we are in public! Its so embarrassing I almost instantly give her what she wants. For instance, she took my credit card from my wallet and I needed to pay so I took it back..she immediately made that noise and wouldn't stop. I tried giving her my whole wallet..scream, then some cheerios...scream, then a box of macaroni..scream. She wouldn't stop till I gave her my credit card. I don't want to start the habit of bad behavior getting her what she wants but people turn and stare (and the noise literally hurts your ears). I always say, "stop that, thats not nice" (we are trying to avoid saying "no" too much) but even if I don't give her the thing she wants but give her snacks instead, which sometimes makes her stop due to her mouth being too busy, I still fear her associating bad behavior with treats. What can I do when redirection does't seem to work!

Re: Screaming!

  • You just have to ignore it. People in public May look, but so what. Parents understand.

  • We tell DD "No thank you," and then promptly ignore the behavior. If other people are annoyed for 30 seconds, so what, they'll move on. DD is developing habits now, and you don't want this to be one of them. Especially if she correlates screaming with either getting what she wants or getting a treat.

  • yep, we are right there with you. The scream dd can make is ear piercing. We always just say shh.. inside voice. She can understand the shhh sound because she tries to do it too.

This.  I let her go, and get down by her face and whisper something like "shhhh we have to use our inside voices now" - she usually starts to quiet down when I whisper to her, because she's trying to hear what I'm saying.
  • Thanks! I always said I would "just ignore" because I knew tantrums would be in my future but now thats its happening, I don't even think. The inside voice is a great idea! Thanks for the advice!
