Only producing from one side now

Ds is 13 months. He BF 3 or less times a day now. I'm basically getting nothing out of my 'dud'. I offer it first but he stays on only a min or two and cries to switch. The other side produces fine. Should I just give up and only nurse with one? And does anyone know if this will cause problems nursing future LO's?

Re: Only producing from one side now

  • Totally fine to just do the one side - we are built for twins so technically you could nurse from birth off of one side.  You may have the same dud next time but it shouldn't cause any issues.

  • Yup. I only nurse from one side.  My dud dried up around 14 months and LO refused to nurse on it. I gave up and only nurse off one side now. Since we nurse in the Am and PM only it is no big deal.
  • Thanks ladies!
  • My DS is only 8 months and my 'dud' side is producing significantly less.  Usually I get 1 oz each time I pump from left while I'll get 3 or 4 oz from right.  Sometimes I get lucky and get 2 the first time I pump.  He also doesn't like to eat on that side as much.

I'm not too stressed about it, I'm still producing enough to mostly match what he's eating and when I don't I still have a good 400 oz in the freezer.

Glad to know it's not weird!
  • Been nursing from 1 side since LO was few weeks old. He is now 4 months. No issues so far.
  • Same here, just very lop sided though. I had to get some inserts for my bra for the dud side

  • Has anyone had any issues with baby #2 and the dud? That's my fear. I was always super lopsided --> u U even with both were producing. I just don't want to have an even worse problem with the dud with #2.
