Trying to Get Pregnant

Period mid-cycle after IUD?

I'm so confused! I had the Mirena IUD for 3 years & had regular cycles the entire time. My last cycle started on November 24, which puts me on cycle day 14. After having the Mirena removed at the beginning of this week I had very light spotting on & off, but today it's getting much heavier. I would almost say its a light period at this point. I know because Mirena is a hormonal BC it can take a little while for my body to adjust now that its out, but now I'm just wondering if I should count this as the first day of a new cycle? Or just continuing tracking my cycle as I have been?

Re: Period mid-cycle after IUD?

  • When you're on BC you're not having true cycles, whatever you've been 'tracking' while on it is useless information now and you can't expect your cycles to be the same - your hormones were artificially controlled by Mirena and now your body is having to sort itself out while experiencing normal hormones it hasn't felt since you had it put in. Count your bleeding as a new CD1 and go from there, it may take months/several cycles for your body to straighten itself out into its new normal.

When I was on birth control and even missed a pill for three/ days I would start cramping and sometimes get a period, I think it's pretty normal to get some kind of bleeding immediately getting off Bc

    It's a BOY

  • I see what you all are saying. This is only my second time going off of birth control since I started taking it 12 years ago, and the first time around I was pregnant before my next cycle could even start! I guess I assumed that since I had periods with the IUD and most women don't, that they would just continue as usual. Clearly I've still got a lot to learn & that's why I'm here -- you ladies know everything!
