I need more sick baby advice. Wont drink pedialyte

We are having a rough month. He got over his double ear infection this week and now he has a rash and is vomiting.

Doc saw him today and said to give pedialyte only today since he is puking up everything else.

He wont drink it. I have tried room temp and cold as suggested. Yup not having it.

Has anyone warmed it? And other advice? He hasnt eaten all day except a bottle in the morning that he puked up and oatmeal that he puked up at 9am. image

  • Maybe try putting it into a medicine syringe and giving it to him that way? he won't like it, but at least it will hydrate him. Also, maybe a pedialite popsicle? I know they sell them in certain stores- but you could probably make one on your own if you have a popsicle mold.

  • I agree with the syringe...maybe try giving him a squirt every few minutes.
  • When K had a puking rally a couple of weeks ago our ped suggested eating one ounce of milk at a time, letting it settle for at least 10 minutes before giving him anything else. Start smaller than that and let him rest and cuddle as much as he wants. Hope he feels better soon!

I second this. J was sick this week too, poor things! Also, J's poop turned yellow... like LIGHT yellow... after his puking bug. Apparently this is normal after some bugs.
  • W started puking yesterday as well. Besides not wanting to eat all that much, and of course the puking, he is in good spirits. Scared me though, I've never seen a baby throw up so much before. We called the doctor and she suggested pedialyte too if we are worried about him being dehydrated. My DH talked to her and of course didn't ask how much, so just out of curiosity, how much did your doctor say to give. Have you tried it in a sippy cup? GL and hope your LO is in the mend soon!

I tried the sippy cup, no go. He did seem to like it when his binkie was dipped in it. We just gave him half a bottle, so far it is staying down. He has had 2 pee diapers. So that is good.

  • He ended up taking 2 half formula bottles. That is a win in my book. Still no pedialyte though. I am not sure why he doesn't like it. I hope this is only a 24 hour thing!

  • My pedi told me to water down Gatorade. Most kids won't drink Pedialyte (it's nasty) and Gatorade has the same stuff in it.

We had to get the unflavored pedialyte for LO. Tried orange and she refused it.

    Hope he feels better soon!

  • Poor thing! One of my kids had a stomach nasty bug when he was that age, and the pedi told me to give him Pedialyte through a syringe because he couldn't keep a bottle down. It helped!

    Good luck!

  • @amer0317 i did not ask how much. It seemed like I was supposed to give it in replacement of a regular bottle. So if I were replacing 4 bottles, use the same of pedialyte.

No I am sure that is too much. When lo was sick with the stomach bug a few weeks ago I called the telehealth line and they told me to give her 1 tsp every 5 min when she was awake for the first 8 hrs if she didn't vomit any more then to try a bottle after that.

  • The bottle says for a one year old to give 32-64 oz a day. Says to consult a dr for under a year.

That would end up being like four 4 oz bottles if you did a tsp every 5mins. That's what our pedi said... 4 oz bottles of it- and to make sure he got 4 or 5 bottles if he was still vomiting
Yes if they are awake 8 hrs straight, anyway the point was more to have little amounts at a time so they can still be hydrated and able to keep it down. I hope oohgurls little guy feels better soon

  • He never ended up drinking any pedialyte but seems to be feeling better today. Drinking about 50% of his bottles and kept his oatmeal down.

    Thanks all!

  • Has this been asked: are you nursing or FFing?  Our pedi says to mix it with formula instead of water.  When DD was sick it worked like a charm.  I'm not sure how that works if you are nursing.

He gets both BM and formula. I thought about mixing it with the formula but the website said to not do that. I think that may have been ok for diarhea but for vomiting she wanted me to avoid formula all together.

  • We have used the G2 Gatorade instead and my daughter loves it.
