I guess it depends on what he likes. My son is into Thomas the Train so we bought him a little train set that included a talking Thomas. He will also receive a Leapfrog Lettersaurus. For his stocking we gave him art supplies and a two board books.
We got DS the Melissa and Doug play kitchen with pots and pans and play food, Mega Blocks (he loves his wooden ones), a play Dyson vacuum and everything else is shoes, pj's and a recliner. We'll also buy him some books and whatever my parents have gotten him.
That is an incredibly broad question and might be dependent on the child, but my 22-month-old's favorite toys are large trucks (a dump truck and a fire engine), his play kitchen (complete with play food, pots and pans, etc.), and musical instruments, especially pianos.
