Babies on the Brain

I don't know anything about babies, but....

The side-eye Saturday comments about MILs who hoard their grand babies got me thinking about my own MIL. I am by no means one of those women who tell real moms how to parent, but DH and I have noticed some weird things that MIL and SIL do with our two month old niece that just do not seem to make sense.

How often do babies eat? My ILs put a bottle in the baby's mouth every time she shows any discomfort. We were over there for Halloween and in the hour we were over, our niece finished one bottle when we arrived, downed another, and had a fresh one made when we were leaving. I was over to see her yesterday and MIL was babysitting. The LO was very fussy and cried constantly. MIL was insensately jamming a bottle in her mouth, and when she wouldn't eat, she made her ANOTHER! I'm not a mom but I think if she doesn't eat, she probably doesn't want another bottle. The baby was also sweaty and it was way past the normal time she goes to sleep (even MIL admitted that) but yet MIL would not set her down. She kept holding her and trying to feed her. I said nothing about that, but said I would come back and visit when the baby was feeling better.

Is this normal? Do babies really eat that often? I was talking to a friend about it and she said that causes food dependency. How have you fed your LO In the past? I plan to sit with my mouth shut since I'm not a mom yet but I was shocked by this. I feel like MIL throws all logic out the window since this is her first grandchild.

SIL is really no better about things. She started the heavy feeding thing and also says she hates putting the baby down because she feels terrible hearing her cry. I'm assuming that's a new mom thing?

  • Ds2 is breastfed and will only eat every 2 1/2-3 hours. He refuses to eat any more, unless it's solids. Doesn't matter if it's a bottle or boob. Every kid is different but usually if a baby just ate, you try other things to soothe (new diaper, rocking, etc).

I don't know how old she is but it sounds like too much food and not enough everything else.

And a baby's cry can be the worst sound ever, especially to a stressed out parent.

  • Kiddos that have reflux will eat very often like that. My son did and pretty much is the opposite of overweight. There might be more you're not seeing.

  • I am not a mom (yet) but I work with infants, and an infant of that age usually eats about every 2 hours. It doesn't sound like hunger was the babies problem, perhaps gas or tiredness.
