Pregnant after 35

5 wks and low progesterone. SCARED!!!

Some bad news today. It seems my progesterone levels are about 6.5 or something dreadful. Way below where they should be for this pregnancy to stick.

I am 36 years old, 5 weeks pregnant and have been spotting brown blood for a few days. I worried about it, but calmed down when I learned that a lot of women spot in the beginning and turn out just fine. I had intercourse the night before it started, so I just assumed my cervix was sensitive.

I spoke to my midwife and took a blood test. The results show that my hCG level is just fine. But my progesterone level is too low at 6.5.

She said she would give me a prescription for progesterone vaginal suppositories depending on the results of a second blood test taken today. If the progesterone has not risen a little, she doesn't even recommend taking the supplemental progesterone. The miscarriage would be pretty certain and the supplements would only drag it out longer.

I am really surprised! My cycles are a little short (24 days) but they're regular. My luteal stage is typically 12 days.

I am dying waiting for the results of the second blood test! I just got married and this is my first pregnancy.

So sad and scared...

  • I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through. I too am 36, in my first pregnancy and just celebrated my 2 yr. wedding anniversary. I understand your feelings and I know it's easier said than done but try to hang in there and stay positive. Sending thoughts and prayers your way.

  • I've had low progesterone both of my pregnancies. The first I spotted so they did a blood draw and my progesterone was low. OB told me that the pregnancy could go either way but put me on oral progesterone pills. I now have a healthy 17-month-old.

This pregnancy I insisted on a blood draw when I found out I was pregnant (new OB). My progesterone was 7.5. They put me on vaginal progesterone cream and I'm now 15 weeks.

I would do the progesterone if your betas look good next draw. It can't hurt! Good luck!

  • Hi! I don't post very often but I felt compelled to respond to your post. I am 36 and pregnant with my DS2. Actually will have my c section this thurs 12/12. With DS 1 and with this pregnancy my progesterone was pathetically low. I was put on vaginal supplements for it both times. With this pregnancy I bled a lot in the beginning and thought I was having another miscarriage. Thankfully baby was fine and as I said he will be here thurs! I knows it's hard but try to stay positive! Thoughts are with you !
  • I just had my second baby 2 weeks ago.  I have low progesterone with all of my pregnancies.  With my 1st pregnancy (the month after we got married) I had a miscarriage.  It was devastating.  I came to find out after finding out that I was pregnant again that I had low progesterone.  I was automatically put on progesterone gel.  Yes, progesterone will not stop a miscarriage from happening if it is going to happen and could prolong the inevitable but if there is nothing wrong with the pregnancy there is no harm in using the progesterone.

I would bet all the $ in my bank account that the reason why I had the miscarriage the 1st time was also due to undiagnosed low progesterone.  My original Drs office never tested for it.

I would ask for the prescription and get started right away but that is me based on the road I have been down.  You have to do what is comfortable for you.

    Good Luck!!!

  • My first pregnancy my progesterone was low so I was put on vaginal supplements.  It turned out that pregnancy was a blighted ovum (unrelated to progesterone).  I had one cycle after that loss then I got pregnant again.  My OB was concerned with my low progesterone the second time around so he put me on injections to make sure I was getting the best amount in my system. Hcg continued to increase and they continued to watch my progesterone.  Our first u/s showed a healthy heartbeat :)  I am now 21 weeks (22 on Thursday)  As I sit here typing this I feel LO rolling and kicking :)  Our 20 week scan showed a healthy baby!  I took the injections until I was 12 weeks.  The OB told me if it was not a viable pregnancy the supplements will not prevent miscarriage, but sometimes for various reasons our bodies do not respond with progesterone like they should and need a boost.  As long as hcg doubles, I would ask for the supplements.  Good luck!

  • Ladies, thank you for your responses, and your positive thoughts/prayers.

Some very surprising news... my progesterone rose on its own to 8, and then to a 10 three days later! However, I thought I had a miscarriage because I had one day of red period blood, cramping and passing some tissue. But I went in for an ultrasound the next day and my little baby bean is still there! Healthy little heartbeat & everything! I'm now 7 weeks and have been taking the progesterone supplements for over a week. I am pretty shocked and quite grateful.
