1st Trimester

Literally Gaining by the Freaking Day!

My sister suggested I join a message board because of my obsession.  I have a history of weight issues and last year I lost 80 lbs. from 250 lbs.  which was quite an accomplishment for me.  I did the HCG diet which was difficult and torturous but it worked.  I managed to keep the weight off for a very long time until now.  Anyway, I am 7 weeks pregnant and I am bloating like crazy!!!!  My boobs have tripled in size and my jeans are tight and I"m a wreck.  I keep reading "you should gain 2-4lbs in first trimester" and I definitely gained way more than this.  I don't know if it's because I was watching my weight for so long or if I'm now eating things I stayed away from (like pasta, bread, etc.). I am only eating whole grains, fruits, veggies, etc. but I am an emotional basket case.  PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE ELSE HAS GONE THROUGH THIS!  I was overweight before I got pregnant and now it seems I've already put on almost 10lbs in the last 3 weeks.  Any words of encouragement are appreciated.  I'm make myself upset because I should be more thankful but this first trimester alien takeover is hard for me.  HELP!

Re: Literally Gaining by the Freaking Day!

  • Boobs getting bigger is normal even if you don't gain weight. I've lost 20lbs since I got pregnant and I've still gone up more than one cup size. That's normal.

It's also perfectly normal to suffer from increased bloat during the first trimester- which will make your clothes harder to fit. Your digestion changes when pregnant- it slows down and your body retains a lot more gas and water weight. Some women look 5+ months pregnant during the first trimester just from the bloat. And that has nothing - nothing- to do with your diet. Just your body's response to the changes that pregnancy brings.

That said, if you are gaining pounds TOO, you can adjust your diet. Baby only needs an extra 300calories over your usual caloric intake. Definitely not eating for two. And beware of morning sickness if it hits- Mine didn't hit until 8 weeks and it was pretty bad- I didn't want to look at food for a long while. Patience and be gentle with yourself.

  • Its totally normal to gain weight in pregnancy, in the second trimester you may gain more slowly, and then average out to in line with goals. But the most important thing you can do during your pregnancy is....
    PUT AWAY YOUR SCALE!
let your doctor keep track of your weight, and tell you how your doing, eat right, and exercise, and DRINK DRINK DRINK, and you will be fine!

I know weight is tough, but you will lose it again after the baby is here... Just try to relax, and enjoy this time... Things will get better! :o)

    Good Luck, and congrats!

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I have been packing on the lbs this first trimester.  Up 10-12 already.  I am concerned about it, but I know it is going to happen when you go from being fairly active to riding the couch and from being carb conscious to a carb eating machine.  I am hoping that it will level out in the 2nd Tri when I start to feel better. I am starting to be able to get back into working out and the nausea seems to levelling out....

  • I have a history of disordered eating, so obsessing over a scale is always frustrating and unhelpful to me. I've decided to just not look at my scale and let my Dr monitor my weight. Then I don't have to add unnecessary stress on top of everything else (which can also lead to weight gain oddly enough).

  • When I got married in 2011, I  was 320 pounds. I had my thyroid removed in 2005 because I had thyroid cancer and started ballooning after that no matter what I did. My doctor put me on phentermine to help because people without a thyroid have an extremely hard time losing weight even when on synthroid. When I found out I was pregnant on November 1st, I was 206. Yesterday I was 222. I'm gaining too fast and its making me feel paranoid also. I worked soo hard to lose over 100 pounds and it sucks to see the scale moving upward. I knew I would gain weight when I was pregnant, but I didn't think this quickly. I'm still waiting to hear about my blood test to see if my synthroid levels need to be changed.
  • When I was pregnant with DD I gained 10 lbs the first month and then only 7 throughout the rest of my pregnancy. I think most people (besides books) will tell you that unless you have extreme morning sickness you usually gain the most in the 1st tri. You start craving and eating what sounds good because honestly some things just don't sound or look good. I know it's hard not to worry but like PP said you usually start slowing down on gaining in the later trimesters. Remember that retaining water adds pounds too but it's not really fat, it's water. I just figure during the spring and summer when it gets warmer I'll start walking and hopefully lose some, or at least not gain as quickly.

  • If you are truly freaking out about water retention & bloat then speak with your OB. You might benefit from speaking with a professional about your anxiety.

I wouldn't get too worried about end results right now. It's all so variable.

  • If I may... if anyone is in the Chicago area and needs a newly expanded, hard-to-find bra size, I ended up in a 34i when I was nursing my DD. Tina's Closet in Lisle, IL carries all those fun sizes in stock every day. If your boobs feel like they're on fire and you don't think your bras fit any more, go get sized again. Sweet relief! Even at a different store or measuring yourself and ordering something online, it is so worth it! Apparently, "pregnant boobs go through 3 growth spurts.". I'm just hoping mine either end up the same size so I can reuse the old bras or that they don't end up as big this time around!
  • I'm right there with you. I've gained about 10lbs already. It makes me really depressed sometimes. Its hard but just remember now is not the time to diet. You can try to alter your diet and increase fruits and veggies but no dieting. This is the first time in my life that I have ever felt like I don't need to diet and honestly its kind of relieving. When my weight bothers me I just try and take a deep breathe, remind myself that its ok and that I'm suppose to gain some weight in pregnancy and that I can work to gt it off after the beautiful baby is here.

  • With my first pregnancy I gained 19 lbs in first tri and 70 total.  It took me about 9 months to lose it all.  This time around I'm trying to be a lot more careful about what I eat, and making sure I drink a lot of water.  Also being careful about liquid calories has helped.  I was addicted to Slurpees last time and those pack a lot of calories apparently.  I have a lot of bloat and my jeans are seriously uncomfortable.  You said it seems like you've gained 10 lbs, but have you weighed yourself to see? This may ease your worries.  If you have gained weight though, just remember to discuss any fears about rapid weight gain with your OB and they can help you.

  • Are you taking progesterone? If so that can make you gain weight rapidly. I have gained 15 pounds in less than 2 mths :(
  • I have gone from pretty much all muscle at 134 to carbs and couch and belly at 148 and i am at 10w3d. The nausea has taken over and made me dysfunctional. Hoping to get back at the gym a little 2nd tri- you have to stay off the scale and if necessary tale the mirror out of your bedroom - my body was gaining and changing our of control and making me so upset- have to accept it. Aside from the nausea, the body image stuff is the hardest .... Have to STAY OFF THE SCALE AT ALL COSTS.

I feel you.  This is me exactly - although not exactly all muscle at the start I was quite fit and trim.  I am really struggling with the rapid change and a bit scared for the future.  My body isn't used to being so sedentary so I think it has gone into some kind of catatonic state.

  • Haha- same. My muscles are twitching a little as they lose mass and not being worked. I tried to run yesterday and after two blocks couldnt catch my breath.
I am banking on feeling better second trimester.
