PSA: circumcised baby boys

I just wanted to remind all you amazing moms to pull down on the skin of LO's penis during diaper changes. If you don't, the skin will attach to the head of the penis. My sister learned this with my oldest nephew. The ped pulled on it at his two month check up, and it had reattached. He cried and cried. Of course, he doesn't remember this, but I don't want to inflict any extra pain on my sweet boys if I don't have to.

  • We were told to only do that if the skin was moving up over the "mushroom head" which we have not yet seen. Is this what you were told to? Since we haven't seen it move up, we haven't pushed it down.

  • You def need to do this after it has healed. My DS had his slightly reattach also and the pedi pulled it down. He wasn't a fan but no one had ever told me to pull it down. All is good now but I don't want that to happen again to this LO.

  • We were told to pull it down as well! I forget to do it sometimes frequently though, I hope that doesn't cause a problem. Thanks for the reminder!
  • Our ped told us to pull it down once it healed at his 2 week check up.  Did it for about a week and haven't had any reattaching issues.
  • Sure wish I had been told this in the hospital. LO already has adhesions. =(
  • I didn't know this. My lo is a month old and I never ever did this. Excusr me while I go check his weenie.

  • I didn't know either. LO is 4 weeks old today. This may be a weird question but how can you tell if the skin reattached?

  • Thank you for this tip! No one told us to do this and after I saw this I asked my pedi and she said we should be doing this. So, thank you!

When you change his diaper, take your pointer finger and thumb on each side of his penis. Sort of slide them down, without pulling too hard. If the skin is loose and moves, it hasn't reattached.

I really don't know why they don't give these instructions in the hospital. If it had not happened to my nephew, I would've never known to do this to my four year old as an infant. I try to tell as many moms of baby boys as I can.

  • I do circs as part of my work and always tell the moms to do this once a day or so with diaper changes or baths for the first year (once the circ is fully healed).

If adhesions are already starting to form, you may be able to gently break them up by pulling down after each bath.

Even if the skin isn't starting to go back over the glans, it is a good idea to make this a habit just so it doesn't become a problem.

Thank you. I feel like this is pretty important information the hospital should have mentioned.

  • Thanks for posting this. I knew nothing about this until you posted it. I did what you said and LO seems fine. Nothing has re-attached so that's great.

  • I too was not told this information. Once LO wakes up and I change him I will be doing this. LO is almost 4 weeks.
