Pregnant after 35

AMA & very low AMH TTCALer looking for success stories?

Hi there ladies.

As my title says, I am an over 35 (40) year old and the main board I am on is TTCAL. I had my ovarian reserve testing done last Feb and although all other measurements were normal, including antral follicle count, my AMH was under .16.

At that time my RE at the time stated I had just as good as good a chance of having a healthy pregnancy naturally than with IVF because he didn't believe we would get enough good eggs to work with. Now, another two losses later (so six early first tri losses total), I'm getting my tests redone and seeing another RE.

I have asked both about supplements like DHEA, vitamin D and COQ10 but they both advised me there was nothing to prove that they would help but I could go ahead and take whatever I wanted. I had started taking DHEA but then had some reactions and did some reading that made me less comfortable with that. So I stopped that but have continued 200 mg per day of COQ10 and 1000 per day of vitamin D.

From this second round, all the hormone tests came back normal so far. My antral follicle count was 7 (5 on one side and 2 on the other which appeared to have a cyst - the RE commented that that could be interfering with egg production). I am waiting on inhibin (which wasn't tested before) and my AMH and I guess something called my egg score which must be some overall indication.

I am expecting again that the AMH is going to be extremely low.

But I am crossing my fingers that despite that I still might be considered a good candidate for IVF with screening.

I am on pins and needles waiting for the results and my consult.

I am just wondering if any of you can share are success stories with me of those in a similar situation? And/ or anyone who was able to raise their AMH? Through what methods?

Thank you in advance and sorry this was so long!!

Re: AMA & very low AMH TTCALer looking for success stories?

  • I also had low AMH, I was told I would need donor eggs by one Dr and an RE who said I would need IVF. We weren't going to be that aggressive. He did but me on DHEA for 3 months, they said that is how long it takes to work. They did monitor my labs while on it. I also took CoQ10 but took either 600 or 800 per day along with baby aspirin. I also did royal jelly just because I read good things about it. I used Clomid. I got pregnant both tries with Clomid and timed intercourse. The first ended in blighted ovum. That time I wasn't on dhea. After that miscarry, I started the dhea along with everything else I was doing and waited the 3 months they told me and I got pregnant again. I now have a perfectly healthy 6 1/2 month old! I don't trust drs. My RE was great but its their job to sell IVF. When we said no but wanted to still try with meds they were supportive and I love them because without them I would not have my little guy that I love so much. Best of luck to you. I believe you can still get pregnant with low AMH. I was horrified when I found out mine was so low.

  • no experience with RE- I wish you happiness on your journey!
  • I have very low AMH (tested twice - once was 0.2 and once was 0.8) and my DH has low morph. Our RE gave us a less than 2 percent chance of conceiving naturally. (From what I have read, there's nothing you can do to raise your AMH numbers. Once they are low, they are low.)

The RE put me on a slew of supplements (DHEA, DHA, COQ10, and Inositol in addition to Vit. C, E and prenatals), and she advised me to start acupuncture, which I did right away. I also had to cut out caffeine completely (no decaf, no chocolate) because my doppler showed reduced uterine blood flow. I am also taking baby aspirin to help blood flow.

We were gearing up for our first IUI this month, but I did a hpt on Monday and had a surprise BFP. It's still super early for me, but I am thrilled that we've at least made it this far. As my acupuncturist said yesterday "the numbers don't tell the whole story."

Hugs to you and FX for some positive news and progress.

  • My numbers were good however my vitamin D was low. So I started supplementing. DH had .5 morph he took a ton of supplements, cut out pop, and did a detox. Along the way I was diagnosed with BV which I probably had the entire time TTC. Once the infection cleared up and we both supplemented for a few cycles we got out BFP on our own we were moving to UID if it didn't happen after one more cycle. We also charted temped and used OPK oh and I have a short LP.

  • I also did acupuncture and completely cut out caffeine and alcohol. I forgot to mention those, I was just thinking about things I took.

  • Thank you so much ladies. I really appreciate the feedback.

I just got my results today and apparently my new result was .76!!! Which is a heck of a lot better than under .16!!

I am not sure what to attribute it to but I'm definitely continuing the vitamin d and COQ10. I don't know if that means we'll be a candidate for IVF or not but I was over the moon excited about the change when I felt sure it wouldn't change for the better.

    Thank you again!

I forgot to mention that my RE also put me on a low-gluten diet (I have been 98% gluten-free since the end of September). She said studies in rats have shown decreased fertility with high levels of gluten.

I don't show the classic signs of gluten intolerance, but my sister is celiac and she also had fertility issues before she was diagnosed, so there could be something to the gluten link.

  • I had .45 AMH and had to go through IVF b/c DH has 1% morphology. After multiple canceled cycles and different protocols, RE finally figured out how to get my follicles to respond well enough for ER. My success came with Microdose Lupron Flare protocol after a few months of supplementing DHEA, CoQ10, Vitamin D and acupuncture. I was already on a gluten-free, caffeine-free, alcohol-free, sugar-free diet. We retrieved 7 eggs and all fertilized with ICSI (and of those, 2 passed PGD testing. The one we transferred has had no problems during this pregnancy and we can't wait to meet him within 9 weeks!).

You should come over and chat with some of the ladies on PAIF board to get similar success stories. There is hope!
