Babies: 6 - 9 Months

lazy about self-feeding

Is anyone else having this challenge with their kiddo?  My son will use a pincer grasp to pick up leaves, pick at string, etc, but refuses to pick up his finger food and feed himself.  He's going to be 9 months in a couple weeks, and he'll sit there like a baby bird waiting for me to stick a puff in his mouth for him.  If he picks up a puff, he'll just hold it in his hand, and smack it against the high chair tray until it turns to crumbs.  He'll actively resist if I try to gently lead his hand to his mouth.  He was the same way with the bottle, and just started holding it himself a couple days ago.  It seems like he's just very content to be served.

For the record, he doesn't really put anything in his mouth by hand.  He'll lean foward and chew on things occasionally, but he's not a very oral kid.  He prefers to hold things and examine them visually.

Re: lazy about self-feeding

  • So if he doesn't already put objects in his mouth then he's not lazy, he just hasn't learned how to feed himself get, just keep practicing

  • No, I know what you mean. My daughter won't feed herself puffs or anything like that but she does great with stick shaped things like the pear spears we shared at lunch. It just seems like she does t want to let go of the food.
