May 2014 Moms

Baby moving?

I joined this group a couple months ago, but then got busy and disappeared for awhile. But I'm back! And have a question for fellow first time moms and/or the moms who can give me some memories of their first pregnancy :)

I am 14 weeks and 6 days, so basically I'm 15 weeks. Our little Gummy Bear is growing beautifully, and at the 12 week ultrasound was given an 89% likelihood to be a boy. The ultrasound tech said "I've done this all day, everyday for years. I know a boy when I see one." But just in case, we are not rushing out to buy blue, just by chance we have a little trickster girl (which we will find out after the new year) :)

Anyway, I was just sitting under a blanket on the couch, watching TV, had just finished eating a burrito, and I feel this poking sensation a little below my belly button. It was really tiny, but still very noticeable. It was like a tiny limb pushing at my belly. Well, that's what I'm thinking. I'm a first time mom, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I've had plenty of gas bubbles in my life, and that was no bubble! My midwife said first time moms don't usually feel movement until 18-20 weeks, but that's on average, which means it could definitely happen earlier.

Any other moms feel baby moving at 15 weeks in a first pregnancy? It's the most beautiful sensation! Can't wait to feel it again!

Re: Baby moving?

  • Yep. Second pregnancy here and I've felt that exact thing for a week. It feels like a lighter version of what I remember my DD's kicks feeling like (which I didn't feel/identify until week 22 or so). Below belly button... Kinda near top of panties?

  • I am a first time mom and I felt the first movement exactly at 18 weeks. Mine feel like gas bubbles. It is an amazing feeling and I love feeling him move around.
  • I have felt what I think is the baby a few times this week. I have to be sitting very still and relaxing (which I happen to do a lot!) To me it feels like a bubbling sensation.

  • I'm a first time mom as well, & I'm 100% sure I felt "flutters" just before I was 15 weeks along. Exactly how you described it! I'm now 16 weeks 2 days, & the flutters have gotten a lot stronger & more frequent. I can't wait until it's all the time, it's the most amazing feeling!

How far below your belly button? At this stage you're unlikely to feel fetal movement much higher than a couple of inches above your pubic hair line. Movement closer to the belly button is probably intestinal. Also, at 15 weeks the baby isn't big enough or strong enough to "push." It's more like light bumps and taps.

    (Edited for goofy wording.)

  • Today was the first day I've felt the baby! I'm a little over 18 weeks and my dr said today he's directly at my belly button. Two weeks ago he was right above my pelvic bone. It's highly unlikely that's baby movement maybe gas
  • That is exactly how I would describe the first movement I felt from my daughter. I was exactly 17 weeks and I felt a tiny poke a few times in a row very low on my stomach. I remember thinking it felt like she was "knocking" to let me know she was there. :)

Oh, and I know it was her because my husband felt it a day later! Try putting your hand there next time, I am 17 weeks now and I can and have been feeling the baby slide around and move his or her arms and legs for a week now. It is the most incredible thing!
  • Unlikely my foot. I'm 15 weeks tomorrow and have been feeling baby hit, poke and flutters all week long. I'm a first time mom as well. I was an active baby and made my mom crazy for almost her entire pregnancy and my kid is pretty active already.

  • Sometimes I THINK I feel flutters but then I'm not so sure. It's below my belly button so it's definitely not intestines or stomach. I just can't wait until I know for sure it's the baby!
  • I'm a FTM, and I started feeling my baby move pretty early, I think at around 14.5 weeks. Those movements were very subtle and I only felt them a few times during yoga. I wasn't sure at first, but as the movements have gotten stronger and more frequent, I'm very sure I felt those first movements around the 14th week mark.

At 18 weeks, I'm able to feel the movements from the outside of my belly, and have been able to since around 17 weeks. I think that the experience is different for every women and pregnancy, but if you think you are feeling movement, you probably are!

  • I felt it today! Was sitting in a meeting and I felt a poke. I almost burst into tears I was so excited!
  • I think I've felt a little movement (18 weeks 2 days now) too - down low, and mostly to sides (especially this week) as pp have said.  A couple weeks ago it was kindof like a little flutter - just the tiniest hint of something, but seemed way too far forward to be intestinal and also just not like things I've felt in the past.  This week some times it has felt a little more like a poke.  But I'm still not sure.

The thing that is worrying me, is, and maybe STMs (or S+TMs) have some experience/advice here - I usually feel it the most in the car.  I drive a little over an hour each way to/from work.  And actually the first time I thought I felt it I was in a small airplane, so similar motion but maybe a little more vibration/shaking from the props.  Does this mean I'm growing one of those babies who will hate the car instead of sleeping nicely in it?  If she gets active now when in the car?  I'm hoping it's more a time of day thing (don't usually feel it on the morning drive) - driving home (and being in that plane) between 6 and 8 PM and maybe that's just her active time?  Or a typical time for babies to be active and a time when many of you are relaxing and reporting feeling movement then?  If our baby turns out to be miserable in the car that will mean major complications to the daycare plan!  Which is OK of course - the main important thing is that she is healthy.  But still ... if this is a big warning sign and I should start re-planning now it'd be good to know.

I know I know it's a silly worry.  But I just can't seem to pass up any opportunity for something to worry about these days ... :)

  • STM here, and I am tall and thin. I felt first tiny movements at just barely 15w- 14w 6d. Baby measures almost a week ahead but my EDD was not changed. I feel them much more often now when laying still. :) With my first I was about +30lbs average weight and felt first distinct movement during the 17th week or so. My H even swears he felt movement yesterday evening when he was holding my belly. Baby seemed like it was rolling over and very active around that time.

  • I'd think it depends on your body frame/type as well. A thinner gal might definately feel movement earlier. I hear the placenta and baby's placement also play a factor. Also, when baby is rolling it DOES feel like a 'push' to me, it's the baby's back or butt bulging out. My first did this constantly 24/7 pretty much weeks 17-30 something. By the later weeks, you could actually SEE his bottom or body parts poking out and creating a bulge in my midsection.
