Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Milk based vs. Soy based ???

My son turned 6 months old today and has been on soy based formula since he was about 3 weeks old. I was advised to switch to soy based from milk based by his physician because he was vomiting A LOT. I was told that maybe his belly was too sensitive for a milk based formula. From day one on the soy based formula, he has been VERY CONSTIPATED. & I was just recently told that the vomiting could be a result of his constipation. Sooo... I am thinking of switching back to a milk based formula. I am a new mom and only know what I have been told.. Any advice is VERY appreciated!!

Re: Milk based vs. Soy based ???

  • We have also been on soy based. However we were never vomitting or constipated.  She was very gassy on milk-based, to the point of not eating because of the amount of gas in her system. She has been fine since on soy. We haven't had any issues with constipation.

  • we are on soy also because of gas and possible milk protien sensitvity.  And yes LO has had problems with constipation ever since.  I keep prune juice on hand and her pedi even gave us a prescription for stool softener that we disolve in her bottle if it gets bad enough.  I'm hoping we will be able to make the switch to cow's milk when she turns a year, but we'll see.  She is 7 months right now
  • Our ped suggested a teaspoon of dark Karo syrup 3 mixed in with the formula 3x a day for constipation, and though his poops are still hard and more adult, he doesn't have problems withactual constipation anymore.  I'm not a huge fan of soy for little boys because of the estrogen, but he's got a milk protein intolerance and was having internal bleeding on regular formula.

I can't speak to the vomiting.  J's never been a puker.

  • call me old school but I've always heard that you're not suppsed to give a baby karo.
  • Our pedi also told us to use Karo syrup and we have been doing that in every bottle since he was about 2 months old. I didn't know anything about estrogen being in the soy formula.. guess that's something else I will have to research. Thank you all for your input!!
  • I'm not crazy about doing the karo thing, because I try to avoid sugar in his diet in general, but it's worked, so I can't advise against it.  I looked into making organic formula, but it was just too much work.
