Cloth Diapering

Will I damage my CDs if I...

Will I do any damage to my CDs if I wash them with items that have been previously washed with fabric softener?  To be more specific- some of my cloth wipes make it into the hamper and are washed with regular clothes which I use fabric softener on. If those same wipes are then washed with the cloth diapers, could they do any damage?  If it is a big deal I could be more diligent with keeping the wipes with the diapers.  They are just so handy to grab sometimes for boogies, dirty faces, or hands and then get tossed in the hamp.

Re: Will I damage my CDs if I...

  • Technically it's recommeded to not ever use fabric softener in any machine that is used for CD laundry or thoroughly wipe out the machine between uses. If you buy that, then I think you'd want to be diligent about how your wipes are washed.
That being said, I think it'd take a heck of a lot of cross contamination to actually do any damage. Twice now I've had an insert accidentally get left my washer, get washed with non-CD safe detergent and then get dried in the dryer with a dryer sheet. No obvious harm was done. My inserts still work fine. Maybe I did long-term damage, but I'll really never know.

Oh, man. This thread is making me scared to wash my diapers in MIL's machine when we visit over the holidays. That woman loves her some fabric softener.

ETA: to the OP, if I happen to used a wipe as you said for boogies, face, or hands, I still put it in the diaper bin when I'm done with it. It'll get washed a lot sooner that way.

If it was me, I'd give the machine a quick wipe down before using it. Along with the dryer.

  • Oh come on. It's no big deal. We use fabric softener with all of our regular wash (not CDs, not LO's clothes, but everything else.) It's fine.

  • We use fabric softener and dryer sheets with all of our other laundry, too. No issues with CDs.

    Good to know! Thanks
  • I don't use fabric softener when I was clothes... I don't like smelly things and I honestly don't notice much of an improvement on the softness...
But... DH loves his fabric softener.  If I tried to tell him not to use it, he'd possibly want to switch to 'sposies!  We haven't had any repelling issues.

  • DH uses fabric softener and dryer sheets on his clothes. I switched to wool dryer balls for all of mine. We also use liquid Tide for all non-diaper laundry. I haven't noticed any problems from it.
