NWMR - booster seats and school vans

My DS attends an aftercare program at his school. They are going on a short field trip (about a mile) next week using the school van. They have asked us to provide a booster for those under 8. DS is a tall 5.5 yr old but I still have him in a five point harness in his combo seat. I really don't want to pull our jumbo car seat out and leave it at school and then make them install it. They are going to a bookstore so then what, they leave it at the bookstore till i pick him up there? and there will be several kids his age and younger. how many seats are they willing to lug around? I've been contemplating getting a small backless booster for things like this but I'm not sure if the seat backs in the van wiill be high enough. My husband has said that he might just leave work early so we don't have to worry about it. That seems extreme. How would you approach this?

Re: NWMR - booster seats and school vans

  • I would probably buy one of the cheap ($20) backless boosters for occasions like this and to use down the road.  They seem like they're pretty light, so not that big of a deal to carry to the bookstore and leave in a corner somewhere until the event is over.  If they expect any kind of booster, wouldn't the van have to have seat backs that are high enough?  (Otherwise wouldn't all the kids be toppling over backwards?)

This is what I was thinking but then I got nervous bc you aren't supposed to use a backless booster unless there is adequate head support to prevent whiplash. I didn't want to assume the school thought of this.
