Baby's belly measuring large

Just wondering if anyone else has had this show up on an u/s.  I had my final growth u/s today at 34 weeks, and baby boy is measuring in the 74th percentile and about a week ahead (which has been pretty consistent).  Everything looked great, but his belly is measuring quite a bit bigger than the rest of him.  The OB is not concerned, so I'm trying not to be as well, but just wondering if anyone else has a Buddha baby?  I actually think it's probably more genetic than anything else, because when I was telling this to my mom after my appointment, she said I had a huge belly as a baby (and that's still where I gain weight), so he probably just got this from me.  I have read it can also be a sign of GD, but I passed the 1 hour with flying colors.

Re: Baby's belly measuring large

  • No one ever told me about this "percentile" that I see some people talking about...

My LO is long! She is measuring 2 weeks ahead since 23 weeks. Last week at 35 she was measuring 37...

  • Yeah I was diagnosed with GD last pregnancy after failing my 1 hour by 1 point and baby's belly measuring greater than 90th percentile..but that was at 29 weeks. She evened out with time and by 36 weeks was in the 50th percentile overall. No real advice but I've been there!

  • My LO's head and torso were measuring big at the u/s I had around 31 weeks. Her arms and legs were measuring right on so she was in the 63rd percentile. My doctor wasn't concerned at all when I brought it up. She said at this point babies will stop following the norm for size ans start taking on characteristics of their parents.
  • We've been measuring big but proportionate since our 20W A/S. I thought for sure I had GD especially after failing the 1 hr., plus it runs in my family, but we're in the clear. LO's belly is 99%ile and her head is 97%ile. She's currently 6lbs. 8oz at 33W, according to an U/S this past Tuesday. My OB doesn't seemed concerned so I'm not either.
  • Baby girl weighed 6 pounds this afternoon and I'm only 32 weeks.  She was in the 100th percentile.  My 3 other kids were big babies, so this is really no surprise to us.  I do not have GD (passed the 1 hour twice this pregnancy) and didn't have it with my other kids either.

  • Thanks everyone!  It's interesting, because people keep telling me I look small for how far along I am, yet the baby is measuring big, my fluid levels are fine, and my fundal height is right on track.  I have no idea where this baby is hiding!

I'm glad to hear that things can even out still, and others are dealing with one thing or another that is off on the measurements (which I know aren't totally accurate anyway).  Baby boy is currently around 6lbs, 3oz but OB doesn't think he will be so big to need a c-section or anything, so that's good news.

    Thanks again!

  • DS's stomach measured bigger than his head at my anatomy scan at 38 weeks. It was one of the reasons we ended up inducing at the doctor's recommendation. When he was born, his stomach size was completely normal.
