Baby Names

Odin

My grandfathers middle name is Odin and DH and I love it as a middle name as well!

I have been looking and do not see any negatives about the name but wanted to ask if you ladies know of any?

I was unaware of the Cohen name and all that went along with it and do not want to use a name that may be offensive to anyone! Thanks!

Re: Odin

  • I think it would be great as a middle name! I have never heard the name before, but that makes it better imo :)

  • This is wonderful.  I really love it and the meaning behind the name is great as well.  Go for it!

  • The name itself just is okay to me.  Love the significance though.  The only negative is that is makes me think of "odor".

  • Because of it's a family name I say go for it! If it was based on just liking the name I would say it's not my style. But seriously, Odie could be a super cute pet name from you & your hubby. :) I'd totally call that sweet boy Odie...how precious. :)

Anchor Man - "Great Odin's beard!". Haha, I still like it! Odie is a cute nn too.

ETA: quote was later changed to "great Odin's raven" in the movie.

  • I love Odin.  I think it's one of those super badass names.  I love it even more given that you have family ties to it.

  • It makes me think of the Norse god and the Avengers movies..like the name Thor
  • I like odin, and thor... most the old norse god names are gp names. And i agree if its a family name use it

  • I like it! But I do have the Thor movie associations - not that that is a bad thing.

Me, too. I'm not a big fan (and like pp, it also makes me  think of "odor") but since it's a family name and would be in the MN spot, not FN, I think it's OK.

I think it's a bit much. However, I feel that family significance often trumps many of my thoughts regarding names. I just feel this way about most names from mythology in general. I think it's nice that you are wanting to honor your grandfather.

ETA: Sorry posted before I finished.

Odin is badass. Btw, what's wrong with Cohen? I think of Leonard Cohen, and goodness knows there's nothing wrong with that association!

A cohen is a high priest in the Jewish religion. Appropriating this name when you're not Jewish is considered offensive to many.

  • Beloved family member's name in the middle name spot? Go for it.

  • I agree with this.

I'd stay away from names from anyone's spiritual beliefs. Too much cultural significance, and it's strange to use it if you're not from that culture.

  • I'm late to this, but Odin was a Norse god with one eye.  Yes, he was badass but still.  His attributes were, among other things, war and death.

    Not really a fan.
