Anyone else heard anything about this? Just saw it on my Pinterest feed. This is wrong on so many levels!

ETA: Here is the article for those who can't clicky:

Bill to Ban Certain Tattoos, Body Piercings Passes Senate

The Arkansas Senate passed a bill to ban tattoos, piercings and other similar body modifications which it characterizes as “non-traditional,” recently.

Senator Missy Irvin of Mountain View, Arkansas sponsored the bill entitled ”An Act To Limit Body Art Procedures”. She says that body modifications should be limited to “traditional” tattoos and piercings. Her proposal was to essentially ban scarification procedures and dermal implants, as well as certain tattoos which remain yet to be defined as by the vague language of the bill she sponsored.

Almost unbelievably, this bill passed by a 26-4 vote. Following this, the bill was sent to the House, where it took on even more vague language. See the link above for the bill as it was eventually “compromised” on in the House. The scarification ban from the Senate version was removed, while considerable ambiguous language remained.

The House “compromise” bans dermal implants unless performed by a doctor. This essentially, and in practice, outlaws the body modification. As well, the bill’s vague, undefined language – even in the edited, House version – while editing out some of the original language on tattoos, fails to define a number of important issues raised by the Senate version, including what they mean by “cosmetic” tattoos as opposed to “non-cosmetic” tattoos.

If the government dictating what you can and can’t do with your body bothers you, SPREAD THE WORD!

  • Wow. Never heard of this before, but it sounds ridiculous.  What tattoo would be considered "non-cosmetic?"  Eyebrows on your face if you had a condition that doesn't let you grow hair?  I am lost...

  • I don't think the purpose was to ban tattoos or piercings but rather sub-dermal placements, i.e. the things that raise the skin under a tattoo. I can see the reasoning behind it, if it's to prevent infections and such. But they aren't outright banning tattoos, piercings, gauging, etc.

And it's only in the state of AR. Have you ever been there?!? You couldn't force me to get a sub-dermal placement in certain parts of that state! And I go there a few times a year, my in laws live outside of Little Rock.

  • It really pisses me off, if it is true. The government has no right to tell anyone what they can/cannot do with their own body as long as it does not harm another person.

To a point. Has there been an increase in infections? Are they sterilizing their instruments properly? Who is placing the stitches after the procedure is done? There could be public health issues at the core of it.

  • I went to college in Jonesboro, AR (about an hour from Memphis). It was a pretty great town. I love Hot Springs, too. Little Rock was "meh" to me. While AR is not my fav place to live, it isn't that bad either.

The article also says that the language is so vague that it can be interpreted in different/many ways. Today, I can't have the sub-dural implants. 5 years from now, I can't get any modifications to my face/head (lip ring, nose ring, face tatoos, cartilage ring in top of ear etc.) 10 years, I can't get any type of body modification.

I guess it is that whole "give an inch, take a mile" thing, ya know?

That should be addressed with stricter guidelines / Health Department checks of the facilities licensed to perform the procedures. It should not hinder the consumer from being able to enjoy the product from a reputable and clean establishment.

I just found this article relating to the same thing. It is a little better.
  • Leave it to Arkansas...

  • As a former licensed piercer I am not a fan. Personally, I love dermals. My last one came out at about 10wks...yes, as everyone said, I had my cleavage pierced. I've also had dermals on my wrist, collarbones, neck..love them.

  • I don't know how this can be enforced? What about those who already have tattoos?

  • Aren't all tattoos cosmetic? And how would they go about enforcing a new tattoo policy for those who already have tattoos? Force us to remove them? If they think they can get me to remove my daughters tribute, they're nuts.

Really hoping this is just a joke :)

  • WOW! My mom and dad do piercings and tattoos (professionally licensed of course!) and so I grew up around them and I can tell you there is no way in heck that I would not get them if I wanted them, breaking that law or not. I can't believe it passed!

  • @siblynika they will have to cut 3 of my limbs off if that is the case. Later removal would take too long and not be worth it to them. Haha they can suck it
