Bassinet and swaddle advice

Hi ladies! I know my ticker is long overdue for an update but LO is going to be 4 months old on Monday. We are planning to take her out of the swaddle next week. Meanwhile she is still sleeping in a bassinet in our room. She's close to rolling from back to belly but not there yet. I didn't swaddle DD1 so I'm anticipating a difficult transition on this (any advice is greatly appreciated!!) I'm wondering if I should transition her to a crib at the same time. Any advice? If you had LO in a bassinet, have you transitioned yet? If so, at what age? WWYD? TIA!

Re: Bassinet and swaddle advice

  • Savannah will be 4 months on the 14th. We moved her from the bassinet to the crib about a month or so ago. She was outgrowing the bassinet. She would move around so much that her feet would touch the sides and once she gets her feet on something she starts kicking like crazy. So, she now sleeps in the crib just fine. She's still swaddled though. Once my sleep sacks come in that I have ordered (stupid slow walmart) we'll be transitioning her to those. She's starting to bust out of the swaddle me too easy. Last night after her MOTN feeding, I had to reswaddle her 3 times cause her little hand kept creeping out.
I would stick to one transition at a time. Changing to the crib was no big deal to her, but it was torture for me the first week. I woke up about once an hour checking the monitor. Now I only wake a few times a night.

  • Can't really give advice on transitioning as we haven't done it yet. We both swaddle and have DS in a basinet. I have heard though that one change at a time is best. LO isn't rolling back to tummy yet but I am starting to swaddle with arms out as a step toward no swaddle. And as for the basinet once DS can pull himself up sitting he's out of there because then its a hazard since our basinet isn't too deep. I think then we will transition to the crib but most likely a PAC n play in our bedroom which is where the basinet is now.

  • I'm doing the exact sane thing right now. I am going to do the crib transition first and then the swaddle. My only concern is if he starts rolling while swaddled, in the crib he will be able to roll and won't be able to roll back. In the bassinet he can not go anywhere.

  • @Natalie2167, I roll up two receiving blankets and put one on each side of her. It keeps her in place if she starts rolling a little.  She isn't yet, but jic, I'm prepared.

  • We transitioned to the crib a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately it lasts for about half of each night and then he comes back into bed with us. I can only take getting up 3x per night before I cave.
He's still in a swaddle but as of last night will now roll from back to his side so it's only a matter of time for the full roll. I need to just remove the swaddle altogether. It's such a crutch!

  • It's been said 1000x, but for swaddling transition I highly recommend the Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit.

I don't think DD is ever going to her crib, maybe when she's 2?

  • We started swaddling one arm only, we tried left arm out only then right arm out only, right arm out worked better, he's back to normal night sleep so we should transition both arms out soon but haven't. I was afraid to go cold turkey and didn't want to invest in a sleep suit, just another thing to wean lo out of.

Our transition to crib happened awhile ago, he grew out of his bassinet at 2-2.5 months, transition was harder for me than him, he was fine. I slept I his room a few days but he was great. We did do the rolled up receiving blankets around his hips but eventually I felt they really weren't doing anything so I stopped after a month of that. Good luck!
