Sizing U/S

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but doesn't everyone get one of these?  If you got one, what weekly appointment did you get it?

This is my 2nd, and i got one with the first but that's because the OB said my belly was 'measuring large' and when they did the u/s she was just normal sized and laying funny.

I've switched OBs this time around and this one hasn't said anything about getting another u/s.  I had the dating one and the a/s.  But i would LOVE to see face again so i'm hoping i'll get one somehow.

  • Nope...I had 3 last pregnancy for GD but this pregnancy absolutely nothing..I haven't seen baby since a cervical check at 27 weeks.

  • My OB doesn't even do a dating U/S. If nothing is wrong, you only get 1 at 20w.

  • It's not standard for my doctor soi never had one with my older two. I've had several this time and more scheduled due to a weird combination of history of giant baby birthing, not gaining weight, large fundal height, and %ile drops.
They can be hugely off anyway so I don't think you're missing much

  • Nope. Not normal for a low risk pregnancy.

  • A sizing U/S is not common at my practice either. The only reason I am having one on Monday is because my anatomy scan (18w) showed a low-lying placenta and they need to make sure it is now located in a safe place for a vaginal birth. Had this not been the case, I would not have had any others.

  • I'm getting one at 36 weeks because my fundal height is measuring big and also the BP issues. Without those things, I would not be getting one.

  • It is standard practice for my ob and I get one at 37 weeks. Is there a place you can go to have an elective one?

  • I get one every few weeks, but that is because I am high risk. I think standard practice is that they won't do it unless they suspect that the baby is not measuring on track.

  • The place I went for my A/S scheduled me for one at 37 weeks when I was checking out.  I don't want to go, and pay $45 for a 2D ultrasound, when there is a technical school down the street from my job that will do a 3D one for $50! Or a free one at my OB's office.  I wouldn't be worried, you will see that baby's face soon enough, and will get to actually kiss and nuzzle it when they are an outside baby!  :x

  • I got a growth u/s because it's standard at my OB. I almost asked to opt out though because I've had 2 people close to me be pushed to inductions because babies were "measuring like they'd be 10 lbs at 40 weeks" only to both have babies at 6.5lbs or less. I didn't want to be scared.

You will see your LO's face when she's born and if they're not ordering you around for multiple scans and tests that's a good thing. I'm sure lots of mama's on this board would love to be going to the Dr a lot LESS.

  • Yeah.  And they are having a christmas special so it's cheaper right now too.  And it's 3D which i've never had done.  So I think i may try to convince DH that we should get one for Christmas.

  • It's standard at my OB's practice, so I'll be getting one at 36 weeks (along with my GB swab and a cervical check--busy day!).  With the growth scan, just know you may not be able to see much of the baby.  Everything is so cramped in there, it's really hard to tell what you're looking at.

  • My OB doesn't do them unless your fundus is measure 2+ weeks ahead or behind.  Or if she can't tell what position LO is in at 36 weeks.

  • I had mine today at 34 weeks.  It is standard to have a final growth ultrasound at my OB practice, but typically at 36 weeks (someone in the scheduling department put me in for it today instead of my next appointment).  So unless something crazy happens, that was my last one.  My baby is in the 74th percentile and already weighing 6 lbs,2oz (approximately)!
