Subchorionic Hematoma...very worried...

Hello all,
I was diagnosed at 11w with a subchorionic hematoma measuring 9cmx6cm.  I am now 15w4d and have had bleeding and spotting since the diagnosis.  My last ultrasound 2 days ago showed the clot had not gotten any better.  Baby is doing fine, but my Dr. tells me I'm at a risk for miscarriage since the clot isn't resolving itself, and at risk for placental abruption among other things if it does not go away.  I'm going to see a high risk OB for a more detailed ultrasound in 5 days, but that seems like forever from now...  I was wondering if any other moms have experienced a subchorionic hematoma?  And what was your outcome?  We're very worried, and the Dr. says it's just not something they know much about or can do anything for, so the waiting game is kind of stressful!  Thanks moms!

Re: Subchorionic Hematoma...very worried...

  • I had a subchorionic hemorrhage at 6 weeks pregnant and experienced my first bleed. It was much smaller in size than yours, and by my 19 week appointment it had resolved itself. However now I'm facing placenta previa. Not sure if the subchorionic issue may have sparked the previa or not. I hope yours resolves itself!

  • I had one and spotted from 5 weeks until about 12 weeks. Mine healed around 12 weeks. I took it very easy until mine healed...no heavy lifting, no sex, didn't stand for too long, and no exercise. I tried to rest as much as possible. My bleeding seemed to worsen if I over did it. My best to you. I hope yours resolves soon. I know docs sometimes prescribe progesterone to help with the healing...you could ask your doc about this. Keep us posted. Hugs!
  • Thanks ladies!  Always good to hear some positive outcomes!
  • My friend had a large one diagnosed at 10 weeks by a bad bleed. Hers never resolved it was quite large still at her AS scan and she still had it in a later scan in pregnancy. She went on to deliver at 36 weeks and has a healthy 2 month old now. You do have greater risks for preterm labor and those other risks that your dr mentioned. .

BFP #2 (5/18/13) due 1/26/14. Grow baby grow!
    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • I had a SCH that started to bleed at 8.5 weeks. I was being seen weekly by my RE and I saw her Wednesday and there wasn't any bleed/spot on the u/s. Thursday night I started bleeding severely and went to the ER (I was on blood thinners for my clotting disorders). The baby looked fine on the u/s but they saw the SCH. I went back to my RE the next day and the SCH was bigger. They said I was at a higher risk of a m/c but they weren't *super* worried about it causing a m/c (their bigger fear was my clotting disorders). I had bleeding/spotting on and off until about 15 weeks and when I had my anatomy scan it was finally gone.

Hang in there! I know it is scary to deal with.

  • I ended up having 2 SCH’s at the same time, I don’t remember the size but I do remember that they were both considered huge and almost surrounded baby. It began at 7 weeks and continued until I was around 22 weeks before they were completely gone. I bleed a lot, in fact I didn’t stop bleeding like a period until close to 20 weeks and then it was just spotting threw out the day, I even passed orange sized clots and had lots of cramping. I don’t remember now when they stopped growing and started to shrink I think I was around 16 weeks or so. My DD is now a happy 2 year old.

  • I had one at 9 weeks with my last pregnancy. I don't remember the measurements but it did eventually go away. I really hope yours goes away and you have a healthy pregnancy, this must be very scary.
  • Thanks so much for the support everyone!
  • I had one at 8 weeks that resolved itself. Had unrelated preterm labor issues starting at 24 weeks though but I'm now almost 35 and baby is healthy. Good luck, most times they resolve by itself though.
