Different sizes

To all the other MoMs...I had to undergo fertility treatment and this is my first pregnancy. I'm between 5-6 weeks and had my first ultrasound today. It revealed two sacs! Twins! Im in total disbelief, just wasn't expecting it. Baby A is two days behind baby B and can't really see much in baby a sac. They say it's all normal but anyone else experience this and still have two healthy babies or are further along in pregnancy and everything good?! Thanks

Re: Different sizes

  • My baby B was a month behind baby A and had absolutely no fluid around him until week 15 they constantly told me he wouldn't make it or something was very wrong. It was so hard not to worry but he is currently my biggest twin and my noisiest haha! Both are super healthy and although it was a scary pregnancy all turned out 100% ok

    Hi @teddychica15

I'm newly pg with twins myself and also underwent ivf to get these lil miracles. My first u/s was at 5w4d. 1st sac we seen definitely had yolk sac but in 2nd there was nothing thos they both measured as they should. My next u/s was at 7w4d and both babies were there, we were able to see their lil hearts flickering away. So try not to worry, they are 2 lil ppl and they will grow at different rates. When is your next u/s?

  • I'm pretty sure mine were a few days apart at my first u/s. They continued to have a slight difference throughout my pg and were a 1/2 lb different at birth. They're di/di. All normal to be slightly different.

  • We just did clomid and hcg trigger shot. Next Tuesday I'll be 6w4d and get another ultrasound. One baby had a yolk sac and I could see it but the other one didn't and looked like a black spot. They were also spread far apart, no where near each other. I'll be interested to know when we find out if they are fraternal or identical. I still can't grasp it.
  • Mine measured about 4 days apart from the first time we saw them at 6.5wks. If they said everything looks normal for the stage you're at, try not to worry too much. It's still very early and your next u/s should give you a bit more info.

If you had two gestational sacs in the u/s that were apart (2 dark/black circles surrounded by the white/gray area) that would indicate di-di twins. One larger black sac with both fetal poles and yolk sacs inside indicates mo-di or mo-mo. Congrats!

  • Ok sorry but what does that mean?! I'm still frazzled and not understanding lingo lol. I mean yeah one was bigger but they both measured at the days they thought, but very far apart.

This is what I mean by di-di (2 separate gestational sacs in the ute):
     image

Di-dis are most likely fraternal, though there is a chance they could be identical. Mo-di and Mo-mo twins are identical and share a sac (the black area inside the gray) and placenta, with either a thin membrane separating them or no membrane at all. I also attached a picture of my mo-di's first u/s so you can see the difference. Between the fertility treatments and how you described the u/s, it sounds like you may have di-dis.

  • Yeah it definitely looked like the first picture, but obviously a lot smaller. Thank you, fuzzy brain understands now lol. I'm hoping it's a boy/girl. Want to know now :)
  • I am in the same boat as you, baby B was measuring a few days behind baby A and then at my 18 week appointment he was a whole week and a few days behind. Now at 21 weeks he is 2 weeks behind and I have been going to get ultrasounds every other week. I'm hoping that baby B can catch up, but the Dr said there is nothing to be too concerned about just yet. He did however mention that they will probably need to come out a little earlier so I'm just hoping to make it to 30 weeks at this rate!

even at 6w4d/6w2d (we appear to have each of them conceived two days apart based on the first three ultrasounds we had), it was tough to get a good look at baby A (our 6w2d baby) - we managed to get the right position to find his heartbeat after a good half hour, but it was work, and the tech still had to confirm with a doctor. I had one ultrasound prior to that, around 4w3d or so, and all they could see was the start of one of the sacs, at that time. So I can imagine that anytime during week 5 could be very up in the air :) I hope your next scan is a good one regardless of how many bitty ones are in there!

(I didn't have IVF or any other fertility treatments, just lots of early scans due to irregular cycles and history of ovarian cysts)

Mine are now 3 months old. Caleb was 3 days smaller than John at our 7 week ultrasound. I carried full term, they were 10 oz different at birth

  • I hope I can carry full term, I think that's my biggest worry. Glad yours are doing well.
  • i t is still super early. Wait until 7 weeks when more is known. We have to do IVf also.we had two pregnancies go two different ways. With my daughter, the yolk sac of baby B looked odd, and this one definitely went away by 11 weeks. This time, everything looked normal.. And all three are within 4 days of each other.. At 15 weeks
