Dry hands!!

This happens to me every winter time...but this year is so much worse due to frequenting the bathroom. I really don't like putting lotion on my cracked skin, (and usually it's completely ineffective)...

Do you guys have any suggestions for seriously cracked, itchy skin? Are there any lotions good specifically for broken skin? I literally have a bloody knuckle among 6 other skin breaks. :(

Re: Dry hands!!

  • Ugh, and just think! It will only get worse as the baby arrives and you're washing your hands even more! I just try to apply lotion as much as I can and hope for the best. I've been using Burts Bees with decent success but I don't think it is miracle lotion.

Try using creams specifically for eczema....those are a lot more moisturizing. DD has mild eczema (thanks to inheriting DH's sensitive skin) and I've been using Babyganics Bye Bye Dry Eczema Lotion on her. I noticed that it really helped with my dry hands as well...mine have been terrible recently too. The plus is it's natural and gentle even for newborns so you can use it for LO too if you need. Aveeno also makes a decent eczema cream which is good for hands.

  • Thank you guys! I will definitely look into these because this is just awful!

  • My hands get like that every winter with the bleeding from being so dry, I use a gold bond lotion, it really helps
  • If they get really bad, I would put Vaseline on the dry parts and stick your hands in socks overnight.

  • I got cheap spa gloves from Marshall's. I use Vaseline or coconut oil all over my hands and wear the gloves to bed.
  • Mary Kay extra emollient hand cream is the only thing that helps mine

  • I use Dream Cream from Lush. It's $30 for a pot of it but I swear it saves my hands every single winter. I get horrible winter eczema and my knuckles crack and bleed, even baby wash and lotion make them swell and rash. But I smuther my hands with Dream Cream every night before bed and by morning I'm completely headed and baby bum smooth! During the day I try to avoid the cold (wear gloves when driving to avoid the hot air blowing on my hands), avoid hand dryers, use gloves when washing dishes, avoid hand sanitizer and lotion the back of my hands often. I just squeeze the lotion on the back and rub the backs together. I find my palms are okay and don't need much lotion so adding some just makes them greasy and I spend too much time waiting for it to dry.

O'Keefe's Working Hands....it comes in a round green container.  I got it at Lowe's when we were working on our house (I guess it's popular among people who work with their hands, like construction workers, carpenters, etc.).  I slather it on before I go to bed when I need it.

I had a couple of big bleeding cracks on my hands, and they were a lot better after one night, and completely closed after two.

ETA: I've recently seen commercials for it on TV, and they say you can also find it at major retailers like CVS, Walgreens, Target, etc.

  • I got some Eucerin cream for eczema today at a local grocery store and it's worked wonders on my dry, cracked hands. They felt better after one application!

  • I use aquaphor. It's kinda greasy but it feels sooooo good!
