2nd Trimester

My baby isn't kicking me anymore! Help?

I'm a FTM at 20 weeks and 5 days today, I was 18 weeks was when I started feeling movement. The following week he was kicking so hard my DF could feel him by placing his hand over my belly.. It was awesome! The past two nights I feel like movement had subsided quite a bit. A few flutters during the day, maybe floating to the top of my belly and disappearing at night.. but no big thumps. /:

I've also had crazy dreams of going into labor early and woke up with a cramp above my left pubic bone that crippled me for a moment. It's probably nothing, but I'm just trying my best to stay calm.

Shouldn't I be feeling more consistent movements? Am I worrying for nothing? Should I call my doctor or the advice nurse?

Baby number one on the way! Can't wait to meet our little love bug.

Re: My baby isn't kicking me anymore! Help?

  • Call if you are worried but it's normal to feel movement intermittently at first.  It's quite possible that he has switched positions which is making it tougher to feel kicks at the moment.  If you haven't, you can try drinking something like OJ and then laying down for a bit to see if you can feel something that way - remembering that it may be in a different spot or be more faint than before if baby has moved.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'll second drinking an ice cold drink - Diet Coke or Orange Juice - and laying on your side for several minutes. Focus on what you feel.

With my 2nd pregnancy, I thought I hadn't felt E all day at about 34 wks, and this is what they did in L&D at the hospital - Ice cold juice, nibble of crackers, just lay in the baby and focus on feeling the baby, and click the button with every movement. She moved more than 20 times in that 30 minutes.
  • I've noticed the same shift on my end, and I'm 22 weeks tomorrow. Baby was incredibly active from the moment I first felt him at 18 weeks, and he's just within the last two days stopped moving so much during the day time. I really only feel a few rumbles right before bed and right as I wake up, not much else. OJ and laying on my left side seems to help to increase the movement, or at least make it more noticeable to me.
3 early losses in 2013, but so thankful that our first baby boy is due 3/29/14! <3

  • Im 25 weeks, almost 26 and this happens to me regularly. He will switch positions and there will be a couple days when I can only feel the occasional flutter. He always picks it back up after a couple days! I also have dreams about him being born very prematurely, I think they're all pretty common worries.
I had a doctor's appointment the other day and asked her about the variance in movement and she said its totally normal :-) the appointment coincidentally coincided with one of his less active times and she checked on him, and he was moving around, being my typical little doodle bug, I just couldn't feel him at the time. And this is a kiddo who will kick so much on a regular day that I'll be sore on occasion! Try not to worry too much, I'm sure your sweet baby is just in a slightly more candid position!

  • I've always read that you don't need to worrying about keeping track of kicks until at least 28 weeks.

  • Don't worry about regular movement until 28 weeks. Baby has lots of room.

  • Its normally to have the feeling come and go in the beginning some times if you drink some really cold orange juice it helps to get the little one moving. If you're truly concerned call your dr

Today she has Deffinalty turned back round I'm getting a right beating!! Good luck with all your pregnancys x
  • Hello love its totally normal to feel movement at first then none he/she could be sleeping or relaxing im pregnant with baby #3 and i experienced that alot call ur ob with ur concern its ok good luck
  • My dr told me to eat a candy bar and drink a cold soda and lay on your side. The extra sugar should get em going
  • my friend said her whole pregnancy she didn't her baby move at all. She said the only time she felt him move was when he flipped into his head-down position.
if you're worried, call your dr. and get an ultrasound done.
  • This is actually happened to me today! I didn't feel baby kick for two whole days. I'm 20 weeks and have been used to regular activity since 16 weeks. He's usually very active! I was so scared that I scheduled an appointment with my doc. She did an ultrasound and showed me that baby was completely fine and healthy. She asked me if I had been eating less since I got back from thanksgiving vacation and I replied yes. She said that since baby is receiving less sugars from food, he may be less active. Which made a lot of sense! She also said that regular movement can still be sporadic and undependable. Also, baby is still small enough to hide completely behind the placenta so if he/she is in fact kicking in that area, you will not feel it much if it all, since it cushions that area.

Hopefully this eases your worries! I felt 10 times better after seeing my little boys heartbeat :)
