Ready to Potty Train, but Daycare Provider Isn't

Hi all,

My DS is 25 months and asks to sit on the potty, and has gone in it just about every day over the past few days.  We talked to our daycare provider about starting potty training, and she said she prefers to wait until they are able to pull their pants and pull-ups down themselves, which DS doesn't do yet.  He also isn't showing any other signs when he needs to go nor is he particularly bothered when he's in a wet/poopy diaper.

I wasn't prepared to have to start considering potty training at this point, so I'm not even sure of methods or what's normal and expected.

Any thoughts or advice on next steps?

Thank you in advance!

  • If your son asks to sit on the potty do it!! I wouldn't ignore his lead on this and miss this awesome chance to train. I don't know about how daycare works where you are, but here they pretty much have to follow your instructions, so if you want him to pee on the potty they need to do that. DD is just able to pull up her own undies and pants now, but we trained her at 24 months. That's 8! Months of diaper free time!!

  • Well that sucks:( my dd has been potty trained for 8 mos now and still can't pull her pants down/up that well. Just this last month she started to actually try pulling them down, before this she got frustrated that she couldn't do it. Pulling pants down is a sign, but it's definitely not a prerequisite. I would have a discussion with daycare about this. You might be missing a great opportunity.
  • Why not practice pulling his pants on and off with him? It would be very tricky and confusing to DS to go against your DCP wishes on this.

  • I have been putting my DS in elastic pants to help aide in that. I am having the same problems with my DC, she would like to have DS in pull ups during nap time. He stays dry but she still insists to it is causing a bit or regression . . . .  it's very frustrating.

  • Honestly I would tell her that either she has to help pull up pants.  Pulling up pants is much easier then changing diapers.  If she still won't do it then either don't send him with pants on (have him wear baby legs) or find a new provider.  It may sound extreme but honestly if your daycare provider won't help with pulling up pants what else is she going to not help with (holding a tissue when blowing his nose?- the list could go on)?  I just don't get her side- if I child is "delayed" in using silverware does she not allow them to eat?
