Babies: 6 - 9 Months

weaning off breastmilk-help

My lo is 7 months old and I am currently breastfeeding with formula supplement while I'm at work. I am also currently pregnant with baby #2. My milk supply is decreasing and I would like to start weaning my lo. How do I do this? Is it possible to still be able to nurse at night before bed but not nurse or pump any other time during the day?

New Mommy!!!

  • My mom did that and my cousin only BF her 3 y/o at night

  • Yep.  It wouldn't work in the early weeks but after a few months (can't remember when) the milk production becomes supply and demand (it was hormonal in the first weeks - don't quote me on this my brain is still baby fried) and your body just gets used to what routine you set.  So, if you nurse once or twice a day it figures out how to make the milk for those feeds.

That said, the pregnancy hormones will make it harder and your body may stop producing for those feeds...but I don't think there is a way of knowing until you try.

Most moms try to drop a feed at a time every couple days so your child adjusts slowly.  If they've already been taking formula bottles it should be somewhat easier a transition.

The breastfeeding board on here has amazing support as well.
