Potential milk price increase

I've been hearing that milk prices could go up to $7 per gallon in January if a new Farm Bill isn't passed.  Today, I saw this article from NPR about the reason behind the price increase:

https://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/12/04/248648797/why-7-per-gallon-milk-looms-once-again?utm_content=socialflow&utm_campaign=nprfacebook&utm_source=npr&utm_medium=facebook

I am not interested in talking politics, but I am interested to hear what everyone will do if the price goes up.  Keep buying it?  Cut back?  Switch to an alternative - soy, almond, rice milk?

For us, this would about double the price, but I think we'd keep buying.  DD goes to daycare, so we only use a gallon a week at home, and that's with DH drinking some.  I buy a half gallon of 2% every couple weeks for cooking.  Also, we buy milk from a local dairy at the grocery store, which makes me wonder if they might keep their price fairly low to keep selling to local customers.  If there is a true shortage, we'll have to give rice milk a try.  DH is allergic to nuts, so no almond milk for him or DD.

Re: Potential milk price increase

  • DS can't drink milk or eat dairy products, so it would really just affect me and dh. We don't drink much milk, but do eat quite a few milk products. We would probably keep buying.

DS is on Elecare, which insurance fortunately covers at 100%, which is $687 per month.

  • We live in a really HCOL area so groceries end up being a relatively small part of our budget, and changes in the prices of one item here or there don't seem to have much of an impact.

  • I'd keep buying for DS, but would probably cut down for us. I wonder if Daycares would have to institute some type Milk fee if it lasted a while. Kind've like gas surcharges.

That's exactly what I said to co-workers at lunch... "Crap, my daycare cost is going to go up!"
  • We pay $5-6 now for organic milk. Maybe I would switch to regular milk if prices got really high, but I definitely would continue buying it. Like someone else said, I like in a high cost of living area too, so groceries aren't a huge part of our budget.

  • Milk is a staple. It's just about all DS and I drink, so I'll sacrifice in other areas to afford milk.
  • Oh snap.  I think if that happens I'd look to buy direct from a local farmer, which is not legally advertiseable in my state but I'm sure I could find someone.

  • And we use a crap ton of milk.  Like 3 gallons a week.  And grocerys are a huge part of our spending.

  • Uh, that would be tragic. We go through a good 10 gallons a month. I would still buy it, but yikes.

  • I think dh would let me get a milk goat if that happened.  They provide a gallon a day of milk and I might make goat cheese, butter, or give it away to friends.

We go through about 5 gallons every month, and it has just started increasing since I've just about weaned Albert.  I'm guessing it'll be 6 gallons a month when he's completely weaned.
