Baby name... Sound too much like a vegetable?

We don't know what we are having yet so it may not even matter but... We like the name Ellery for a girl with nn Ellie. We didn't realize until a family member pointed out that it sounds like celery. I guess there are worse things to be called then celery Ellery but wanted opinions. What do you guys think? I think it is unique but not weird which is what we were going with. It was a popular name in the early 1900s then kinda disappeared.

Re: Baby name... Sound too much like a vegetable?

  • I don't think it sounds like celery. I think the name Cecily sounds like celery.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I've never heard this name on a girl before, only a boy.  I don't think of celery.

  • Omg this was my top girl name, but we found out yesterday we are having two boys. I LOVE it! My BFF said it sounded like celery but I didn't care. We were going to use Ellie or Elle as a NN. Do it! :)
  • I like it and wouldn't have thought of celery...but now that you said it, it's all I can think of!

  • Oh and my name is Anna. Do you know how many times I heard the Anna Banana song? If that was the worst I heard then I would have had a pretty easy peasy childhood. She'll learn to roll her eyes, laugh and go on. I did at least.

That's our name for a girl. Definetly dont think of celery when we say it lol. Oh well, a least I like celery.

And Haylo33 I like the name you have picked, especially if you guys like it, that is what's important. Dont let other peoples opinions negatively effect it. Yes it rhymes with celery but it didn't make me immeditely think of it.
  • I've only seen this name spelled Ellory, and it's not very common around here for either sex, so I've never associated it with celery before.

  • I opened this at work earlier expecting it to be able Carys. Someone on the babynames board had a nurse or someone ask her if she had named her daughter Carrots when overhearing her name.

I've only seen Ellery and Ellis on little boys.

  • Lurking from June 14...

I have a cousin with a daughter named Ellery and I have always thought that it is a beautiful name. And, in six years I have never once looked at her and thought "celery."

  • I don't know if I would have thought it had it not been pointed out. But it was and I thought celery instantly.

  • I know someone with a little girl named Ellery and I always think of Ellery celery, but like everyone else says, if you like it, who cares! There are much worse rhyming names... (I once thought about the name Tucker and quickly thought I might want to reconsider lol) I'm also an early ed teacher, so it's possible I just spend too much time thinking about rhyming words. And I also totally thought the name would be Carys.
  • I think it's a really cute name.  Go with what you like.  Kids come up with weird and mean nicknames for all kinds of kids regardless of their given name.

  • I love it, and I'm a strong believer in "if you like it, who else matters?" Its a very pretty name and had you not pointed out the fact that it rhymed with celery I probably wouldn't have noticed at all.
  • I think it sounds like celery but I love it. I have a totally normal name an still somehow someone found a way to turn it and make fun of me.

  • It does rhyme with celery, but something negative can be said about almost any name.  If you like it, use it!  Ellie is adorable for a NN!
