Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Bye bye pacifier follow up...

Tossed all of the pacifiers this morning, and DS didn't make a peep during his nap. 'Course, he didn't sleep either but at least he hadn't cry for 2 hours straight. To answer some of the questions as to why it is a big deal/why we would get rid of it... We decided to get rid of the paci because we felt that it was time- it was starting to impact his speech and we didn't want it to mess up his teeth. Our pediatrician recommended it be gone at 1 year, which we did not do, but at his 18 month they brought up some good points about getting rid of it, namely the impact on speech, teeth and the fact that the longer we waited the ore difficult it would be on everyone. With a new baby coming, it was a good decision. He has never been the kid in Target that is at least 3 sucking away but still. Hoping that this good streak continues and we don't have tears tonight! I was very nervous about going cold turkey, but so far so good... Fingers crossed!

  • Good luck to you tonight!!  I am petrified of doing this.  DS is almost 16 months and our pediatrician said he would like to see him "off" of it by 18 months.  He was down to just having it in the car and for sleeping.  Now it's just for sleeping....

Did you tell your DS that you were taking it away?  Or did you just put him down for a nap and that was it?

I didn't say a word about it. Just put him in the crib and they were gone, no discussion and no questions asked. I felt like he was too little to really truly reason with, so what would the point be of telling him it's gone? That would have been worse for my guy. The younger the better I am told, before taking it away starts messing up naps and they are even more aware that they are missing something. I am shocked he didn't fuss for it to be honest with you- and VERY relieved. Hoping he can keep it up.

  • DS cried for maybe 3 minutes tonight at bedtime, asked for his paci once then cried for Mommy, but we ultimately decided to let him go for 15 minutes and see where we were... 3 minutes later he was out cold clutching his blankie. Hoping he stays asleep through the night!

Slept through the night with no issues or wake ups at all... Just went down for his nap I and fell asleep with only about 90 seconds of tears within 10 minutes! Glad we didn't wait any longer- if he were any more aware or attached I imagine this would not be going nearly as smoothly.

  • DS has no paci at DC as of this week. But, I'm waiting until the new year to do it at home. I want him to be able to have it for our flights at Christmas.

Not arguing with you, but just to play devils advocate, if you take it away all together now, he won't even remember he needs it by the time Christmas comes! And if they are already doing it at Daycare, your battle is halfway there in a lot of ways! But I totally get it- flying with a little one is no effing joke. It's all about survival on a plane with a toddler, and if a pacifier is the ticket, I can see letting him have it.
