Body not responding to pump anymore?

Yesterday was my first day back at work and I was able to pump 3 times (every 3 hrs). The first time I got enough from both to make a 4 oz bottle. The second time I only got about 2 oz total but then I hand expressed and got an additional 1.5 oz just on one side. Is this a sign my body isn't responding to the pump anymore? What do I do about this if this is the case? I have the Ameda Purely Yours and the speed and suction were all the way up by the end of the session.

  • In addition to the above try having a warm drink like tea, start taking a few deep breaths before you nurse and do the same before pumping to help condition your body to let down. Also, try rubbing the middle of your back up and down against a door frame right before pumping. Also, rescue remedy works for me.

  • What they said. Plus make sure your white valves and the clearish membranes are in good working order. I find I have to replace mine once month or whenever I tear one.

  • Make sure your pump isn't set too high bc it can actually collapse your milk ducts and prevent milk from flowing out. Like if you suck on a straw really hard it collapses in on itself. This is what can happen to you if your pump is set too high.

  • This was me two weeks ago! My pumping output was dismal my first week back at work and I had to dip into my meager freezer stash. It's most likely stress related – pumping in a new environment, anxiety over output because you need to pump X oz. to cover baby's needs, feeling time crunched, etc. It was so stressful. I tried the baby photos and videos and even downloaded a relaxation app, but those didn't work for me for some reason.

The second week was much better, though, so hang in there. I think you just need to give yourself some time to adjust and get used to a new routine, both mentally and physically. Remember to eat and drink lots of water ... I know I tend to forget at work.

  • also, check the fit and positining of your hands free bra-- sometimes me holding my boobs more out from my body rather than smushed in helps, too
