High-Risk Pregnancy

XP: Worried that OB won't give me referral to MFM

What makes you high risk?
I am asking because I am worried that I don't have that title/diagnosis. No, I not a crazy person looking for trouble.
I am 12 weeks with twins, I'm 35 and have multiple horrible bleeding SCH's. I soak through pads daily. I feel like my OB is taking my situation very lightly. I asked for a referral to MFM and she told me "No".
P.s: I really like my OB

Re: XP: Worried that OB won't give me referral to MFM

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this, no need for added stress!  From what I've heard from drs/friends, having twins makes you high risk.  Also being 35 makes you high risk, even though my MFM doesn't consider 35 advanced maternal age anymore.  Also with the bleeding, I would say all those factors make you a good candidate to at least have a consult with an MFM.  I would insist on it.  A good friend of mine is 37 and was pregnant with twins and was followed by an MFM her entire pregnancy.  Definitely push for the referral, having an extra set of eyes isn't going to hurt!  Best of luck to you!

  • Thank you so much for the reply. I am seeing the doc next week. I am going to insist on MFM consult to at least help calm my fears and help give me the added monitoring I believe I need.
    Thank you

  • FYI, for insurance purposes, the referral would have to come from your general dr, NOT you obgyn. I just dealt with this personally.

  • You are considered high risk for sure, the other stuff aside, carrying twins makes it high risk.
  • I was sent to MFM just for my three normal scans, but when one of the scans picked up a problem, (growth restriction at 32 weeks) MFM picked up me.  Now I go there every week.
